Isn’t it amazing that several Weligama restaurants serve “the best rice and curry in Sri Lanka”! – and this is one of them, according to reviews. No doubt people finally step outside their hotels and guesthouses, where they’ve been eating tasteless, spiceless, made-for-tourists slop, and think they’re eating the best curry ever. Of course these claims are nonsense, but the people here are friendly and smiling, the few tables outside their homestay have no views but it’s reasonably quiet.
An interesting meal. The food was not cooked fresh. I was the only diner, my meal came out in less than ten minutes and everything was lukewarm to cold. That doesn’t bother me – it’s the way things are with traditional R&C. They cook up a batch. If you come at once (lunchtime) it’s fresh and hot, otherwise it’s neither. But it can still taste delicious. Generous portions? Of the curries, yes indeed, but they gave me half the amount of rice you’d get in a local place. When I’d finished it, with half my curries remaining, I asked for more and ended up with a substantial meal (the quality of the curries about the same as the local places where few tourists venture – that means pretty good rather than amazing) at a reasonable price – or so I thought. The curries weren’t at all spicy. I forgot to ask for this, but it wouldn’t have mattered as she obviously cooks in bulk and aims for tourist tastes.
Then the bill came and she’d charged 150Rp for the extra rice. Traditional R&C is bottomless. Apart from the meat dish, if you want more, they bring it. Free. So 400 - 650 for this very substantial meal and then 150 for a measly plate of rice. I almost reduced the rating for even trying this on, but when I pointed it out, she didn’t argue too hard and we soon reached a compromise. So, yes, good value for the big portions and doubtless way better than you’ve been eating in your hotel. But the locals wouldn’t pay twice the price of local places for this, and the quality will never match places like Wild Beach Bar in Midigama where everything is cooked fresh to your preference (still not the best R&C in SL but a lot closer than this).
