Grand View Guest House
Ranked #53 of 101 Vang Vieng B&B and Inns
Reviewed 11 November 2014 via mobile

This was the first place we looked at and after a long journey decided to stay. We got a double room at the front of the guest house near reception for 70,000 kip per night, roughly £5. We ended up staying 5 nights. There are cheaper options in the area but once the backpack was opened we chose the lazy option to stay put. The room was never cleaned while we stayed here, we didn't get clean towels or extra toilet roll, even when we left key at reception. There are so many rules to adhere to. The room was next to the owners kitchen, the outdoor seating area and reception so noisy at times but not too bad. The plus side is the wifi wasn't too bad from this room. There was ants in the room and saw 1 small cockroache but nothing to really concern or bother me. The bed was hard but that's standard in Asia. The real plus of this place is the location. Outside there is sandwich ladies, so ideal in the morning to go buy a sandwich and bring it back to the guesthouse communal area and eat it with a cup of complimentary coffee or tea supplied by the guest house, while listening to the Hill Myna birds muttering away. The tubing rentals is basically a 1 minute walk, the last tubing stop is 3 mintues down the road at Smile bar. There is lots of restaurants in the street and bars.

Shared a room with two other people all in our early 20's. Very comfortable and very decent price. Great view of the mountains and river from our room door and close to all the action. Though the room rates are cheap, it is easy to find better transportation rates elsewhere. Also, another perk are the amazing sandwich ladies across the street. 10000K for an awesome sandwich and they are there ALL THE TIME. I think I spend as much money on sandwiches than I did for my room.

We are staying at this guest house after looking around for a place to stay and happy that we choose this place. Great bungalow down on the river front, wonderful king size comfortable bed , good air con , good linen and quilt , clean room and quiet. Very comfortable and good value for money. We took three of the four river front bungalows and all three were great. A point made by all was the comfortable bed and great quilt which made a great restful sleep. We also found the owners and staff to be welcoming and pleasant.
I was a bit worried about the position for noise because it is so central to every thing but there was no need as the bungalows are protected from any noise by being at the back of the main guest house. We all agree it was a great choice in V V. Would recommend .
Thank you for our stay.

Room Tip: Bungalows on the river are a great choice , only four of them, feels very private.

Overall we enjoyed our stay here, but the owner and staff were extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. If you like good service, I definitely would not recommend staying here. That being said, the room was lovely, spacious, really big comfy bed, lovely views of river and mountains. Rooms are 100,000 kip with fan and 120,000 with air con. We chose the air-con as it was about 40 degrees when we were there, and it was really worth it. Everything was really clean. Hot water shower and good water pressure. We did both find the owner's attitude to be really off-putting though. He kept insisting that we pay up front for the room and we told him we had to go and get money first, he seemed really impatient at this and didn't seem to want us to check into the room until we had paid. We had just come from an 8 hour bus ride in 40 degree heat with no air con so we just wanted to relax before we went walking looking for an atm. We stood our ground and let us put our things in the room and relax a bit before we went to get the money. He never told us that if we wanted the room cleaned or fresh towels we had to leave the key at reception when we went out. So the whole time we were there we assumed they just did not have a cleaning service, until we left our key for safe keeping when we went tubing on our final day and came back to a clean room and new towels. I didn't trust him to book buses or tours etc. through him so I'm not sure what the prices were like, but we just booked everything we needed elsewhere. Location is fantastic though, all the best bars and restaurants are within easy walking distance. The restaurant right next door is a lovely place to relax and we went there for breakfast every morning. I know other people that paid 120,000 for an air-con room that included a lovely breakfast in a guesthouse slightly outside the main part of town, so there is better value if you don't mind staying a little bit out. Overall we had a pleasant stay here, but I would probably stay somewhere else if I returned due to owner and staff's attitude.

Stayed here for 3 nights whilst relaxing in VV and was vey pleased with the hotel. Few reviews on here doubt it's cleanliness, but I found the rooms to be very clean, very comfortable and turned down at least once a day.

Location is brilliant, bang in the centre of VV with excellent bars either side, a fantastic collection of street sandwich vendors opposite and next to a well stocked shop and tour operator. Also, whilst it may be a little noisy during the day, the bars nearby begin to close about 11pm, so by 11.30 it's very quiet, bar a bit of sporadic traffic noise.

Beds were comfortable for Laos (a little hard!), shower was powerful and warm and the balconies on every room are a nice touch. The views from the rear are excellent, but are a little more expensive.

Owner and staff tend to keep themselves to themselves, but can help with onward transport (though they do tend to add the standard 5000kip commission to the price, which they remove if you haggle hard).

Would certainly stay here again, and wouldn't let the negative reviews out you off. The only problem is the wifi which is supposed to only be available in the lobby, however provided you connect on your way into the hotel, I found it's useable in rooms on the first and second floors.
