“Wonderful setting, inconsistent service”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

We visit the Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins every winter with our local ski club. The main lodge is charmingly decorated and very comfortable, however, we generally stay in the western cabins, which offer more space for gear and group get-togethers. We travel with friends and always request connecting cabins but did not receive them this year. The main desk staff said that the cabins were fully booked and we couldn't change; however, the cabin that connected to ours did not have guests during our stay.

The cabins are very modestly furnished (like older motel rooms) but have all the basics (including a small porch where you can hang your skis; also a coffee maker and hair dryer). Housekeeping service is minimal (we moved the beds to make room for guests and found that no one had vacuumed there in a while). The bed linens are undersized and don't stay tucked into the bed very well at night. Overall, the cabins are overdue for some refurbishment.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the restaurant is very inconsistent in terms of food and service. Breakfast is generally the best meal of the day. The bar serves snacks from the main menu and the service there is generally prompt and friendly. In the main dining room, though, service can be very slow and the main courses just average and a bit over-priced (even taking into account that everything has to be transported into the Park). Considering the number of high-end travelers that the Lodge receives, we just don't understand why the meal service isn't of higher quality.

Travel to the Lodge is by snowcoach (either Glaval Buses or Bombardiers) and in our experience, the drivers/guides have always been helpful, knowledgeable, and very friendly.

Room Tip: Choose a cabin if you don't mind the short walk/ski back-and-forth to the Lodge and need some ex...

Having just come from the Mammoth Springs Hotel, this place was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant was excellent for Breakfast and Dinner. Rooms very nice and up to date. Great location. Wish they had humidifiers in the rooms - the air is extremely dry.

Room Tip: Any room should be good.

The new Snow Lodge is really lovely: fits in with the surrounding area very well, rooms in the Lodge are very comfortable and well -appointed, beds excellent, staff very friendly. The big (and only) disappointment was the restaurant: wait staff were excellent but the food was mediocre at best; some of the items on the menu (and in 5 days, we sampled almost all of them) were essentially inedible (e.g. risotto & squash soup) and the menu was heavily tilted towards meat. Vegetarians have limited selections.

Room Tip: Stay away from the ground floor rooms near the Geyser Grill which smells very strongly of burnt cook...

I stayed in the Frontier cabins, which are rustic vintage, simple duplex cabins. They have bathrooms and a nice heating unit, which is really important in the cold winter. There is also a hair dryer and coffee maker in each room. The restaurant in the Snow Lodge is about a 5 minute walk. The price was pretty reasonable, and if you are a Yellowstone Association member, you get a 20% discount on your room.

Room Tip: The cabins with two beds are much larger than the ones with only one bed. The rooms in the Snow Lod...

I stayed at the Old Faithful Lodge for three nights during my stay in Yellowstone National Park last September - and the location is perfect. This way, one can go to see both the sunrise and sunset without a ton of people around, and I saw Old Faithful go off several times even though I didn't even wait for it! The lodges are basic but good, but it's all about location. Around Old Faithful, there are also many other geysirs and basins worth having a look at.
