Owner description: River located in Yellowstone National Park: perfect for fishing, canoeing or watching the geysers erupting.

The Firehole River has a lot of great features along it. One of my favorite places in Yellowstone is the hike along the Firestone River that starts next to Old Faithful. There are a bunch of geysers and colorful hot springs along the river. My top four geothermal sites in Yellowstone are the Grand Prismatic Spring, the Firehole River trail starting at Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, and Fountain Paint Pot. If you are only going to stop at some of the geothermal sites then these are the must stop places.

This area was one of my favorites in the park. Not as many people seemed to take this road right past Madison and we were pleasantly surprised at the beauty of the river, the falls and the gorgeous canyons surrounding them. Definitely a must see! The geysers got old after a while so this is a welcome change.

As you drive south along the Grand Loop from Madison to the Old Faithful Center you will follow the Firehole River. Take the detour to see the canyon and falls which is the most picturesque section as it cuts through the canyon. Once out on the plains in the center of the park it is far slower and meanders down through the Lower Basin Geyser field, with lakes and rolling hills.

The firehole loop is a short, scenic beautiful drive or hike. the thermal features, particularly in the winter, are fascinating. in the summer you can fish it with good success.

This river runs along the Grand Loop Road between Madison Junction and Old Faithful on the west side of the park. It has a swimming hole along Firehole Canyon Drive.
