“Absolutely Perfect Vacation!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2012

We selected this hotel based on other reviews and the reservation was made by our wonderful travel agent. The entire stay was perfect from check-in, meals, pool to check-out.

Upon check-in James upgraded us to an ocean front room - WOW is the only thing to say. In fact (jokingly), my husband's only compliant was that one of the the palm trees blocked his view of Diamond Head. This was my far the easiest check-in I have ever experienced! One of the pluses is that when you close the patio doors, you hear nothing of the outside.

We would also recommend picking up the discount books that are available in the lobby. They offer you discounts to various businesses in the area and at the restaurants in the hote. The Shorebird serves a really nice buffet breakfast that was reasonable to begin with before the discount coupons!

All the staff that we encountered were friendly and helpful. If we get back to Honolulu again, we will definitely stay here. In fact, we are looking into staying at other Outrigger hotels on Maui.

As mentioned by others, the location is superb. You are just across the street from other restaurants and shopping in abundance. The best find was the local ABC Store which sells everything you need as lower prices than surrounding stores - soft drinks, hawaiian candy, sun screen, shirts - you name it.

Thanks again for a relaxed and wonderful stay!

I've stayed at the Outrigger Reef twice and will definitely stay with them again. My first stay was in December 2010 and it was for a milestone birthday, so we sprung for a suite. Not only did we get a suite, we got the penthouse suite with large foyer, two bathrooms, three balconies with gorgeous views up and down Waikiki Beach, a jacuzzi and a dining room. Housekeeping was amazing and always capped a perfect day with turn-down service and fresh flowers on my pillow. Another fav is the live Hawaiian music every night poolside. The perfect way to end every day. The grille by the pool had pretty good food and a Starbucks on the premises is another added bonus. Centrally located to tons of restaurants and shopping and right on the beach. The only things one could complain about is that the beach is pretty unswimable right outside (tons of coral) but take a quick walk in the direction of Diamond Head and you'll find some great swimming spots. The hotel also offers hula lessons and vow renewal ceremonies. Parking is exorbitant at $25 a day, but unfortunately, this is pretty standard at all of the hotels in Waikiki. Went back in Oct of 2011 and stayed in a standard room with two Queen beds. Nothing can compare to the penthouse suite, but it was a nice room and was right over the pool so I can on my balcony each night unwinding to the live music as the gentle trade winds blew in. So devine! Delightful staff who go out of their way to ensure that you are having a great stay. A real gem in the heart of Waikiki Beach.

Room Tip: Spring for the Penthouse suite on the very top floor...it's amazing!

We stayed for our honeymoon and would most definitely come back. Everyone was so friendly. The ocean front room was immaculate. Everything brand new, the bed very comfortable. They have great stores in the the lobby , very useful. My only compliant was the rocky beach but that why its called outrigger reef because its in front of a coral reef. The first day we were there we seen a sea turtle and a dolphin in the front of the hotel. Also they did not make it anymore special being it was our honeymoon but said that was my travel agents fault and they would send up some champagne which we never got. But thats fine I don't drink. Pool was beautfiul and spa was nice. I have never met such friendly happy people before Hawaii. Also location is perfect you can walk everywhere/

Room Tip: oceanfront is worth the money

My wife and I planned our trip to Hawaii for her birthday celebration and selected the Outrigger Reef for our six night stay. From the initial walk into the open foyer to check in you wish you were staying longer and want to come back! Early arrivals mean rooms sometimes not available but we were shown excellent customer service and were in room within 20 minutes of arrival. We had ocean view room which is ideal (recommended price wise and view) ocean front and city view also available. The hotel is ideally located north west corner of Waikiki beach close to shops and restaurants and with perfect choice between seaside beach bathing and the hotel pool which on inspection of other hotels is the best pool in the area. We walked to Ala Moana shopping centre which is easy 15 mins from the hotel and all other major tourist attractions are easily accessible via bus transport across the road from the hotel. Recommend using the vouchers which the hotel will issue to you as a 'gift' tourist booklet on check in as can save on drinks, shopping etc. All in all expect a memorable stay in this hotel. The pool can become crowded at times but the attendants are great and will help you 'save a seat' when you need to. Also look out for happy hour times at the poolside (3-5pm) and cheap mai-tais at the adjacent 'shore-bird' bar during the afternoon.

Room Tip: Ocean view room recommended

We stayed at this hotel 24th May to 1st June 2012 having chosen this hotel based on TripAdvisor reviews and we wanted something special due to our planned wedding at Fort DeRussy Beach which is a 5 min walk from there. Check in was smooth sailing and received an upgrade and early check in. Had requested king bed as my husband is 6'5" however none were available and were given 2 doubles, this is itself was a little unusual as we had made it known that we were there to celebrate our wedding !! The hotel surprised us by sending up a bottle of champage to celebrate our upcoming nuptials, this was greatly appreciated and a redeeming gesture. Staff were all very polite and accommodating. We were not hassled by the time-share service officers as you had to approach their counter to speak with them.

Back to the beds ... they were the most comfortable I have ever slept on. The linen was fresh and new, however, I believe the decor requires some updating. Bedspreads are very dark and dated and the scrim curtaining needs to be replaced as it is freying on the ends, very noticable. With a little makeover, these rooms could be sensational ... it would brighten the whole outlook. Our balcony overlooked the pool and beach, gorgeous views, however, I am terrified of heights and found the narrow balcony without dividers a little confronting as we were on level 15. I am not overly worried being on larger more confined balconies.

The bathroom was large and clean (water pressure was great) with the vanity unit and basin located outside the bathroom in a area between the hotel room and bathroom. There was a room divider separating the rooms. Towels were of good quality and plentiful, complimentary toiletries were of excellent quality and the hairdryer was powerful. The fridge did not keep things particularly cold and the water from the vanity unit had quite an unpleasant smell. All in all the room was great and housekeeping was good, we never had to ask for anything as it was automatically replaced.

Television was great, however, be careful not to choose a pay movie by mistake. We made this mistake and immediately took action, stopped the movie and called reception to advise them of our mistake. We were told we would not be charged, however, after leaving this hotel we discovered we had indeed been charged for the movie. We have queried this and to date are not sure whether this amount has been credited into our account.

The Kani Ka Pila Grille located near the pool was great, take advantage of the happy hours. Food plentiful and tasty and drinks were averagely priced outside of happy hour. A selection of cocktails were available for $4-5 each. Breakfast is cheaper if you eat prior to 7am, great deals available. The entertainment and ambiance of this area is sensational at night. The Shore Bird restaurant located on the beachfront had reasonable prices, food quite adequate and happy hour is from 12-5pm where you can purchase Mai Tais only for $4.00. The outlook from the restaurant is sensational, word of advice, if you want to eat here at night ... BOOK in advance, very popular. Another word of advice, if you don't want to keep tipping (which became a nightmare) if you are planning to make a night or afternoon of it (or even around the pool) request a room or bar tab and pay just the one amount of tipping at the end. Works out much cheaper.

Location of the hotel was second to none and the walk into the main shopping precinct was spectacular with gas flares all along the pathways. Shops and restaurants plentiful. You can also walk along the beach walkway to all the other hotels on the beachfront, breathtaking views at night. Takes around 10 minutes to the heart of Waikiki.

The lobby was always clean, spacious and inviting and bell service/valet excellent. Whenever we required a cab or information it was forthcoming immediately.

ABC shops are on every corner (just about). I wouldn't purchase duty free alcohol to take to Hawaii (especially if you are Australian) as their regular priced alcohol is much cheaper than that of duty free. Incredibly cheap. If you like your Australian Beer you can purchase Fosters for only $6.50 for 1/2 dozen and wine drinkers can purchase yellow tail for $7.00 a bottle. You will need to have a corkscrew as most bottled wine in USA are all corks, not screw tops.

My overall experience with this Resort is very satisfactory and highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool given an ambiance at night, not noisy at all and it you request a higher level...
