“Average hotel with great location.”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

My wife and I stayed for a week at the Ohana East during April. It was my first time back to Oahu in 30 years!
The hotel was very clean with basic public areas. The 'Kimobean' coffee shop in the lobby was a real plus! The staff was always very helpful. We stayed in a 'standard' room with queen-size bed on the 8th floor. The room was small, but well kept. We had a view northward towards the mountains with a small lanai. This was fine for us, but would be a bit lacking for people used to more opulant accomodations. We could have upgraded to a larger room, but decided for our purposes, this was good. We rented a car during our stay - a must to travel the island on your own schedule. We were able to park at the hotel for $20 / day. The $10 parking mentioned in other reviews is for locals (Kama'aina's), not tourists like us.
A small thing - our room safe was showing a 'low battery' indicator. A call to the front desk had maintenance at our door in 10 min with a replacement. Good service!
One complaint though, we found that the room was noisy. The plumbing groaned off and on and the street noise filtered in. One could hear doors closing in the corridors, sinks and showers running in other suites, toilets flushing, etc. Perhaps it is the age of the hotel (20 years +) before more sound deadining construction was made. We got used to it, but the first night I had to sleep with ear plugs.
Most things in Waikiki are within walking distance. The beach near Duke Kahanamoku statue is a block and a half away. To go farther afield, you can take the excellent trolley service. The trolleys cost $2, but as a guest at the Ohana East, you just have to show your room card and you can ride the 'Pink" line trolley for free! Bonus!
There is a very good Thai restaurant in the base of the hotel called Keoni's. Quite a mixture of tropical drinks! There is also a Pizza / sports bar, and a steak house beneath, but we did not go there.
Overall, this hotel has it's good points (location, clean, good service) and some bad (noisy). This place is good for a stay in Waikiki and not have to pay for the high-end view hotels.

Room Tip: I would suggest that rooms on the west side overlooking the pool area would have less street noise.

We stayed at the Ohana East for one night prior to boarding a cruise ship for a Hawaiian vacation. The staff was very friendly and helpful, providing directions and suggestions within walking distance of the hotel. Our room was small, but very clean. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet. The bathroom was clean and offered the usual amenities. The hotel is centrally located, a short walk to shops, restaurants and the beach. The hotel offers a free shuttle ride around Honolulu - just show your room key to board the trolley. Trolley stops are conveniently located throughout the city. It is a hop on-hop off trolley passing all the major attractions. The rooms are reasonably priced, especially in this area.

I just got back from a 4 night stay at this hotel with my husband who was there on a conference. I have been to Hawaii three times before and stayed in other hotels there. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The location was great and even though not right on the beach it is an easy stroll to the beach with shopping on the way. There are lots of great restaurants around to chose from for dinner and a breakfast restaurant at the bottom of the hotel. Prices there are inexpensive. Our room was on the 12th floor and we could see the ocean. WE had a very small Lanai with a table and two chairs, but we never sat out there. The bed was very comfortable. The room was small, small closet and the bathroom very small with very little counter space and a very small shower with no place to put your hair products once in the shower, but on the floor. I am not a super large person, but can't imagine if I was how I could shower in there. Safe was broken when we first arrived, but was fixed immediately when I called. Repairman was extremely polite. Room was kept very clean the entire time we were there even though our suitcases were all over the place because of the smallness of the room. We rented a movie one night. The cost was $15.00, seemed pricey, but I haven't rented a movie in a hotel in a while so I am not up on that. One night we had a fire alarm go off. Someone was cooking on our floor and apparently burned something. It was a little alarming since we could smell something burning, but the announcement kept saying that it was a malfunction or something like that. Two men were standing at each end of the floor with the emergency doors open letting the corridor air out. Overall, a very good experience. It was clean and the prices are good.

Room Tip: From what I am now reading, I guess I would have asked for an upgrade to a suite.

My family did a small "Staycation" This past weekend and we decided to stay at the Ohana East. We often try to stay at a different hotel every month, just to take ourselves away from all the hustle and bustle of Downtown..... When we checked in the girl at the front desk was super nice and very helpful. she even got us an upgrade to a 1 bedroom suite (cheeee heeeee :-) The room was SUPER ROOMY and had a HUGE Lanai.......WE were on the Penthouse floor so the views was amazing..... The beds were OK and the Decor of the room was a little outdated but 100.00 for a one bedroom suite with seperate living room, and full kitchen (Ice Box, Stove, and Microwave.) Everyone at the hotel was super nice and there is a laundry facility located at the bottom of the hotel!!! Parking is 10.00 for kama'aina and you also get 2 milks, cream cheese and 1 bottle of water in the ice box !! SCORE !!! I hope you enjoy your stay and welcome to the EAST SIDE !!!!

Room Tip: For the prices of the rooms go for the 1 bedroom suites it is the best deal in waikiki ........ Aloh...

We asked to be upgraded to a higher floor and we got the 17th floor with a view of the ocean. The room was clean and large with a wonderful patio door and small balcony.
We were so happy with our room. It was close to the beach and downtown and we especially loved the restaurant. Really good breakfast special (under $5) and COCONUT syrup for pancakes. That was awesome.
