My husband and I ended our week-long stay on Oahu with two nights at the Surfjack. It came highly recommended - my sister had stayed there with her five-year-old when the hotel first opened and absolutely loved it, and the pictures on the website were really appealing. Great design. Loved that it's dog friendly. We also didn't want to be smack in the middle of Waikiki, and the hotel's location was walkable to the beach/shops, but away from the major crowds.
Check in was smooth, and the staff was very nice. But walking to the elevators, I started noticing how worn the hotel was, like it had really seen better days. The hallways were kind of dirty (they're open air) and there was some trash laying around. When we got inside the room on the 3rd floor, our one-bedroom suite seemed much smaller than in the photos, and again, everything seemed worn - the furniture chipped and stained in places, the sofa kind of flat, the grout on the bathroom sink coming off. It was pretty clean in general, just kind of old-looking. And the view, wow: hello, next-door multi-level parking garage! It felt like it was 15 ft away and made the room very dark.
So we called the front desk, and the woman very kindly switched us to the same room on the 9th floor, which was much better. Slightly less worn, slightly better view. Later we'd find the bed was pretty comfortable, and there was a lot of closet space. The room safe didn't work, though.
Other amenities: the coffee bar had pretty good coffee, and the little shop had some interesting clothes and home goods. Also had a really good breakfast at Mahaina and Sons. The pool was never that crowded, even though it's kind of small. And there's a hotel mascot dog! Her name is Winnie, and she's very cute.
All in all, not terrible. Would be great if it got spruced up a bit. Choose your room wisely.
