Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

This is, indeed, sacred ground. Walk here amid those men and women who gave their all for their country. The generals lie amid the PFC's; all are equal here.
Be respectful: this is not unlike being in a church.

“Punchbowl Cemetery is special”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2012

I didn't even plan to go here but it was close by to a planned event (Pacific Roller Derby!). It is an old crater now made into a green, quiet, huge cemetery. Once you explore the graves, you can climb majestic stairs up to a pure white statue honoring those who are buried there (including the unnamed); you may be accompanied by a carillon. There are informative frescoes and information about Pearl Harbor at the top. Lastly, don't miss walking all the up to the overlook. It's a marvelous 360-degree view of Honolulu, the Pacific Ocean and the mountains.

While this is a beautiful memorial, the view was even more amazing. Definitely worth a visit.

“I've never been one for war memorials, but...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2012

...this place brought me, a pacifist, to tears. It is place that you cannot help to be humbled by the sacrifice made by those in uniform serving our country. I'm not joking, I'm a pacifist and I don't believe in war, however, this memorial made me see things somewhat differently.
