We stayed in the Cleveland House-I think there are three other homes with Inns of Newport. It's an older home-small rooms of that 1800's age, but just what you need. (who stays in their room all day?!) Crisp sheets, all the amenities you'd need. Breakfast included-eggs, bacon or cereal- and more. A short walk 2 blocks to all the shops in Newport & the harbor. Staff gave us all kinds of hints-restaurants/bars. Really helpful. We had a great time sitting in dining room-parlor in the evening drinking wine, scotch & visiting with other guests--many from other countries.

We found this Inn on BedandBreakfast.com. It was as described and centrally located. Parking conveniently accross the street. The rooms are small but comfortable. The breakfast was good. Jeff was a great host. The house is idealy located close to most major points of interest.

Room Tip: If you have alot of luggage or have difficulty with stairs request a room on the first floor. There...

I stayed at the Cleveland House for two weekday nights (Oct 11-13) and totally enjoyed the historic ambiance and friendly staff. I was attending a conference at a larger hotel along the marina, but at the last minute decided to try something different. The B&B accomodated the reservation though made only a couple days in advance. The room had a totally comfy bed, small, but adequate, bath with shower/jacuzzi. The third floor room was not luxurious - but quite comfortable and very clean. The stairs were a bit much - but the polite and chatty owner/manager was kind enough to carry up my bag. The breakfast was freshly prepared and the coffee was perfect. Plus, perhaps because it was mid-week and out of season, the price was very reasonable. The B&B is located within a short walk (5 minutes tops) from the downtown shops and marina. I will definately stay again if in the area.

This was a super experience. We are well traveled and this Inn exceeded all expectations. The room, the service, the individual attention to assure comfort was second to none and we have been around the world. The location was perfect and dinner and breakfast arrangements were excellent. The hosts were always available and most accommodating, the room was the highlight with jacuzzi and great comfort. We found this Inn by accident and it was the highlight of our New England get-a-way. Do not pass this by.

Room Tip: Ask for room 305 for the ultimate time.

This is the only instance where I have ever felt compelled to write a review reflecting poor treatment and poor facilities at a hotel, motel or inn. It is amazing that there are so many 5 star ratings on this dog house, the owners must keep busy writing reviews or there are people who never stayed at any other inn. We were traveling in New England and at the last minute decided to visit Newport. We looked on line and Inns of Newport looked okay and we agreed to take a room at the Melville Inn. Upon arrival we spoke with the manager who seemed to be too busy to care about anything but our signing the credit card slip. There are apparently multiple buildings in the same vicinity and we were to get the "upgrade" in a different building. Reading other one star reviews, it seems that the upgrade treatment or bait and switch is the standard method of operation here. The parking was to be behind a second building and breakfast would be in yet a third building which we were expected to sign up for to reserve a time. We were tired and foolishly took the "upgrade" without looking at the room as we were staying only one night, the price stayed at the same high price of over $300.00 per night. When I asked to show me where the parking was as it was confusing, he acted put out, showed me

The room was appalling! It was formerly a small attic room with one half of it covered by a slanted ceiling. The walls and carpet were filthy, the bed spread had streaks of who knows what on it. There was a hole in the ceiling where someone had covered it with a newspaper and the newspaper was yellowed with age. There was a noisy window air conditioner blasting away apparently to mask the dank smell. The television was a small old style box set with a 12" screen and at that there was no room for it. It was on a table right next to the bed. This place looked like a flop house.

We went back to speak with the manager who I have since read is aptly named Rick Ferret. We demanded the original room. He responded that the other room available had a bathroom down the hall, had no television and that we wouldn't be happy. At that point late in the day on Saturday we decided we'll take it anyway and told him we would switch out or leave if unacceptable. His response was that it was too late and we had already made our decision and we would have to live with it. The other room was extremely small but it had its own bathroom so we decided to chalk it up to experience. The bonus was that there were no holes being covered by moldy newspapers. The shower was a claustrophobic experience, your face was literally no more than one inch from the shower head while standing in the only available space in the shower. We also learned that the guest in the adjoining room had a sleep apnea problem.

By morning our only goal was to get away, we skipped breakfast and got out before our car damaged in the cramped parking area. (The cars were so close that you could barely get in the vehicle) In describing this place and Rick Ferret the words that come to mind are rude, disingenuous, claustrophobic, filthy, loud, and nightmarish. Other than that it was fine.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere.
