Staying at the Rose Island Lighthouse as the "keepers" one night in November was a terrific experience - the sights, sounds, furnishings and ambiance were straight out of a dream. This is one unbelievably romantic place. Here are a couple of what I hope are helpful tips and tidbits. tidbit 1: If you rent the apartment and wonder if any of the utilities or appliances are shall I say, a little weird, don't give it a second thought. The electrical power, running water, sinks, toilet, shower, heat, stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker are all pretty normal. The minor exceptions are that the drinking water comes from a water cooler, the hot water heater is on the wall and turns on (and makes a minor noise) every time a hot water faucet is turned on, the gas oven makes a minor rushing noise when it cycles on and finally, the outdoor gas tank sometimes needs to be switched to the backup tank if the primary tank is exhausted. tidbit 2: The foghorn house room is cozy and has unbelievably good views but it is a fair distance from its assigned outdoor bathroom. That and the steep stairs down the outside wall make this a bad choice for older folk. tidbit 3: There is no TV or WIFI but there is cell phone coverage. Bring a good book and also don't miss the chance to read the journal entries from previous "keepers". tip 1: The dock used for the boat from ft Adams in the winter isn't clearly marked so just look for the dock with two large dark blue hoists (cranes) just past Sail Newport - that is where the starfish will dock. tip 2: A seafood dinner in the lighthouse apartment as the sun is setting is a true joy but who wants to cook from scratch and wash lots of dishes? A solution is to stop by Anthony's Seafood (about 5 miles away from ft Adams at 963 Aquidneck Ave in Middletown RI) and picking up a ready to cook seafood casserole, some clam cakes and a pint of the Portuguese fish chowder. It's really good, fresh seafood, enough for three people, easy to prepare and easy to cleanup. Hope the tips and tidbits assist you in having as good a visit as we had.

Room Tip: stay in the keeper's apartment if you can

Once we got to Rose Island we were impressed and loved every second of it. We stayed in the Fog Horn building which, after seeing the rest of the rooms, was definitely the best option. All the rooms are nice, but the Fog Horn building was secluded, quiet (aside from peaceful ocean sounds), and so so cool. However, it took some time and effort to get to the island. Parking directions were slightly confusing. If you're reading this before your trip...Alfonsin Pier is the first pier on the right once you enter the very large (and very last) Parking lot. Also I was informed that the usual Rose Island boat doesn't go to the island Sunday afternoons so we were told to take the Jamestown Ferry to the island at 2:30. We stood at the dock waiting for the ferry, watched it come, waited for it to dock, and then it just drove away without us. We were standing up at the top of the dock where the ferry signage and schedule was...made sense to us but apparently you have to walk all the way down the dock and stand right next to the water in order for them to even stop. There's no official check-in process at the lighthouse. Once we finally got to the island we were shown to our room by another guest since all the lighthouse workers had left for the day. We then had free roam of the island and lighthouse for the rest of the night. Check out procedures were fairly written out but we and the other guests were slightly confused at when the boat/ferry would pick us up. We were told 10am (which is when the boat came) but apparently we could've also taken the Jamestown Ferry back later in the day. Overall it was a good experience and I loved it, but I wish things were spelled out a little better for us.

My sister booked this hotel for one night (to skip out on doing chores!) and said she had the best time. She was a little nervous before going because you're kind of cut off, but they lit a fire at night and had a quaint little room. The sunset was beautiful and she said they would definitely do it again. It was not very expensive (under $200/night) and was a very unique experience.

Room Tip: Choose one of the rooms that is in the main part of the lighthouse so you have heat!

This was our second trip to the Rose Island Lighthouse--a very unique getaway. Lots of history. Rooms availble in the lighthouse and other areas of the property. Bring out what you bring in. It is alot like fancy camping - you do have a full bed. Fog Horn building is directly on the rocks outside the lighthouse surrounded by the ocean! Beautiful sunset and full moon! Special place!

I cannot think of enough positive adjectives to describe Rose Island Lighthouse and crew. My husband and I stayed for a week as keepers. When we booked the trip we were a bit worried there wouldn't be enough to do. We shouldn't have worried. The whole experience was magical, restful and rejuvenating. We were sorry to leave. We definitely plan to return.

Room Tip: The foghorn room and the barracks room each are very unique.
