Owner description: The Elms was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his fortune in the coal industry. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres (c.1750) outside Paris. Construction of The Elms was completed in 1901 at a cost reported at approximately $1.4 million. The interiors and furnishings were designed by Allard and Sons of Paris and were the setting for the Berwinds' collection of Renaissance ceramics, 18th century French and Venetian paintings, and Oriental jades.

This mansion feels very warm and comfortable. You can really envision yourself living there. Memorable.

One of the most impressive of the Newport Mansions and a do not miss place to visit on a trip to Newport if you visit and want to see how the Newport high society lived back in the golden age of Newport.

We were given a wonderful tour and benefited from the general quiet of Newport in February to enjoy a very personalized tour with great insights from our guide. Wonderful gardens outside the house too!

I have visited The Elms several times over the past 35 yrs and find each visit to be truly memorable! The Elms is one of the most beautiful homes in America! The interiors are remarkable, and the rear gardens are stunning! The statues and trees on the property are alone are worth a visit! The tours are self-guided, which means that you can linger in some of the most beautiful rooms in the world and pretend that you're a visiting a century ago. Plan to spend at least 2-1/2 hours, enjoying the gardens and the incredible carriage house in addition to the mansion. The best time to visit The Elms is weekdays in May, June, Sept. or October, when the gardens are in bloom and the mansion's interior temperature is delightful. Summer weekends can be crowded here.

Once again like all of the other mansions worth the money and the trip. The history that you learn is amazing. If you love history or just love to stare at beautiful things then you must go. You can get lost in all there is to see and learn. And I can't say it enough about all the mansions, take pictures!
