Owner description: In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

“The Gilded Age Lives On”
Reviewed 26 April 2012

The gilded age is over, obviously, and we probably will never see such lavish indulgence on a large scale any time soon, but thankfully, we can still get that feeling back when we visit any of the mansions in Newport. They are lovingly preserved and restored, the tours are informative and interesting, and one can immerse himself/herself in the time when ingenuity and innovation and industry gave rise to infinite possibilities and prosperity. Lavish indulgence with reckless abandon may make us wince and cringe, but these monuments to another time also make our dreams awaken! You can't come to Rhode Island and not see the mansions!

“Vanderbilts!”
Reviewed 24 April 2012

Wow. There was some major decadence in the Gilded Age. I've never done a guided tour with headphones. It was great doing it, and I recommend that you do. You will not believe the expense of things or the material. You understand the money situations of that time....feels like Downton Abbey comes to America!

“Better than watching it on the History Channel!”
Reviewed 24 April 2012

My husband and I visited three of the five mansions (Breakers, Elms, and Marble). I have multiple sclerosis and walk without assistance, and was able to complete the audio tours. The audio was informative and quite enjoyable, very well done. The mansions are unbelievable, true gems.
