Owner description: The tour will take you 300 feet below the earth into the pitch blackness old-time miners, some as young as seven or eight, had to face. While you won’t have to deal with poisonous gases, you will feel the chill. The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour is open from April 1st through November 30th and is closed only on Thanksgiving Day.

You walk into the mines and see different spots where the workers worked most of their life, the guide explains what people do depending on their age and wealth, how things were organised down there and so much more! It is really an amazing experience walking there, where the actual mine workers lived and made today's history. Visiting makes you realise that you're life is really great actually!

This place has great ratings and I trust the tour is great when they are not busy . . . but they were "sold out" as the hand written sign said at the front desk when we got there. And I would be fine with that - good for these guys for selling out - but the lady at the desk was not exactly a public relations pro . . . or what's the word I'm thinking of . . . . "nice" comes to mind.

We have now been to all 3 coal mine tours in NE PA. We have like them all. This is our favorite but the guide ( a teen) did not have the knowledge to answer questions about the mine. The other tours had a coal miner or son of one that could answer question about the mines.

Don't skip the mine tour when you visit the Anthracite Museum. You will need to reserve your spot early and be ready to board before the time they tell you. If you have a large group you may not be able to tour together. This tour is informative and shows just how horrible conditions were for the miners. Young children will be bored and may detract from the enjoyment of the others on the tour.

If you want to experience what it was like working in the coal mines in the Lackawanna County, PA area on a daily basis this tour is definitely for you. This mine once employed quite a few people in the area, but is now only a tourist attraction. However, coal was the life blood of the Scranton area. When coal was king, Scranton was the place to be! There is a small museum inside and after visiting the coal mine you can spend some time visiting the city of Scranton.
