We stayed two nights at the beach cottage on our trek-by-car from New York to Alaska. We did not want to stay in a hotel as we wanted a small place. This was the beach cottage on the owner's property where he also rents out a room in the home. Very friendly family who owns it and gladly answers questions about Sitka and Alaska. The cottage itself was roomy - two stories, three sleeping places altogether. The first floor contained two bedrooms, washer and dryer, and bathroom. The second fllor had a kitchenette and living room. There was a TV and DVD player with some DVDs. In the living room was a sleeping area. It nicely accomodated us, a family of five. There was a nice view from the second floor. From it we saw orcas. It is by a cove and we saw starfish. Couple complaints on arrival which the owner dealt with. Prior occupants left usable food in fridge. Owner said the maid leaves it in case the next person wants it. I felt that was a truthful answer. Clothes were left in the washing machine by the maid. Owner said maid shouldn't have done this and he had the clothes removed. Was cold (it is Alaska) and we didn't know how to operate the portable heater until the owner came home and we asked. (There should be instructions left.) When we pulled in, there was a dog loose. (The owner said it was his brother's dog -- the brother lives next door -- and it was brought inside for the rest of our stay.) There is a wireless router in the owner's home. it did not reach to the beach cottage, but the owner told us to bring our laptop into his home where we could use it. The door to his home was left open all the time so we could come in for Internet use. Also, the owner gave us some free stuff, like rhubarb jam, which we took back to New York. We paid $250 a night, which I thought was high but this is Alaska and if you want decent places to stay in Alaska you have to pay more than you expect to in the Lower 48. The reservation was made in January for July. We read in guide books for Alaska that you must make reservations at least six months in advance and they are right. If you're going to SItka and want to stay in a place away from the downtown area this is a nice, clean, comfy place to stay. Also good for a family with kids because the family can spread out and not be cramped in a hotel room. There was a DVD player also in the second floor.
