“Warning: Under new, rude and inept management. AVOID!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2006

We booked a weekend at this former B&B on the strength of the reviews here and their old and unchanged website, and it was a big mistake. Recently, since the favorable reviews shown here were written, the property was sold to a nearby hotel and the new management is rude, dishonest and the very opposite of what you look for in a B&B.

In our case, when we booked our room, we were directed to a central booking office which was very coy about the room we would be getting. When we showed up, we found out why: We were arbitrarily moved from what, on the outside, still appears to be a lovely property to one of the new management's old hotel rooms, a disappointingly musty and cheap looking place. When we complained, the desk clerk, who couldn't get us out of his sight quickly enough, basically told us on a busy Saturday night (when finding another hotel room would have been difficult) to take it or leave it. He gave us a song and dance about the amenities of the hotel (which the old B&B now shares, so there was no advantage there) and generally made us feel like fools. He lied to us about the error having been the fault of "the remaining La Tienda office," which we later discovered no longer exists. We checked out the next day and found much better for less elsewhere.

A word is also in order about the dishonesty of the website and the new management's approach to what a B&B should be. The website still touts the lovely afternoon tea which was once served at La Tienda; now, you can buy a cup of coffee from the machine in the lobby if you'd like. Breakfast (no longer served in the room, as the website still claims) is no better than you'd get at a decent motel these days -- and it is not the point of a B&B. Helpful staff is (or should be).

Overall a real pity, since from all indications this was a lovely place under the former management.

  • Liked — It was an adequate room not too far from the town center
  • Disliked — Rude & dishonest management; nearly ruined our weekend
  • Tips/Secrets — Avoid like the plague -- there is no excuse for this kind of dishonesty

I've stayed at La Tienda Inn 3 of my 4 times in Santa Fe. I like the unfussy comfort, the location just west of downtown, the service, and the staff. However an employee told me, somewhat sadly, as I was checking out that the property has just been sold to the much larger establishment across the street, which I won't name. Friends who stayed there once when La Tienda was unavailable did not like it.

So . . . I hope La Tienda Inn is still around when you try to book.

  • Liked — Its location and the good breakfast each morning, taken in the garden, weather permitting; delivered to room otherwise.
  • Disliked — The heating/cooling controls for my particular room were in the manager's office, and I had to remind the office each evening to "turn the air down" because I like to sleep with a window open.
  • Tips/Secrets — Call first to make certain La Tienda is still open--or whether it has been swallowed by the establishment across the street.

We stayed at La Tienda in the Mascarell room for 2 nights in July and absolutely loved it! Excellent location super close to the Plaza yet located on a quiet street in a very quaint setting. They have a wonderful courtyard with fountain where we ate breakfast every morning. We loved how they handled the breakfasts (which were GREAT) where you were able to eat by yourself in your room or in the courtyard so we could eat in peace and quiet. Excellent idea. The innkeepers and wait staff were EXTREMELY friendly and accomodating and spent 30 minutes recommending where we should eat dinner!! Rooms were clean and nicely themed. There is no question we would stay here if we came back to Santa Fe. We are very picky travelers and have absolutely no complaints!

After a great deal of research, we selected this inn for our first trip to Santa Fe. Previous reviews, price, and location were all contributing factors. We are former innkeepers and frequent travelers. As such, we are not always easily pleased. We couldn't have been more pleased with our choice! We spent 3 nights in the Romero room, then 3 nights in the Duran room (after a side visit to Taos). Both were large, nicely furnished and immaculate. Because this is the warm season, we had our choice of breakfast in the room or in the garden. We chose the latter which was lovely--nice fountain and flowers. The breakfast was healthy, a real plus in our book. The innkeepers and all the staff were very accommodating. The location is perfect--only 4 blocks from the square so we could walk everywhere, and the parking is free. You can certainly pay more in Santa Fe, but who would want to when all you need is right here. We definitely will stay here again and highly recommend this inn.

My wife had stayed here a few years previously. I booked 4 nights in the Duran House during the Santa Fe Century. Mind you, I am not a bed and breakfast type individual, but the quiet setting so close to the Plaza was terrific. We walked to all our favorite restaurants and didn't have to worry about parking and driving. The breakfasts (served in your room) were very tasty, filling and nutritious. We'll be going back many times. You can ride your bicycle from the B&B to the Santa Fe Ski Resort, 16 miles one way with about 4,000 feet of climbing for a pre dinner workout.
