“25th Wedding Anniverary”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2012

My husband and I had our 25th Wedding Anniversary party at the Lodge and it was superb. The setting was stunning, the room was perfect, the food and service was excellent. Our friends enjoyed it as much as we did! The managing director made every effort with attention to each and every detail. We would recommend the Lodge to anyone looking for a perfect place for a wedding, anniversary or any other special occasion. We also spent the night and the accomodations were wonderful! We love The Bishops Lodge!!

It pains us to say that we too have been going to the Lodge for many, many years, and yes, it is a shadow of its former self. My wife’s grandmother lived close to the Lodge for many years. Her family is from Santa Fe. She made it a point to bring me to the Lodge and we enjoyed many years of memorable stays there.

The Lodge used to offer the quintessential Santa Fe experience—not Scottsdale, not L’Auberge, but Santa Fe. The setting with over 300 acres of riding and hiking adjoining is unparalleled.

We are afraid with the change of hands in the past few years, the Lodge has changed drastically. To us "regulars" parts of it are unrecognizable. Our last stay was quite sad. We felt like we were witnessing the end of an era. We agree that for all the lip service given to the interest in the history of the place, it is the history which is most neglected—from long time guests, long time staff to long time devoted four legged creatures. PRESERVATION goes hand in hand with history. The new management does not seem to understand this.

No apologies were offered to long time returning guests who felt they had no choice but to check out after just a few days. No one seemed concerned that we left so early, no one offered to compensate us for the things that forced our early departure (it wasn’t even about money, just the lack of the offer that was most telling). This is not the way of the Lodge.

It does appear to be true that corporate and group guests are given priority. One can understand the need for these groups in this economic climate. However, in spite of the support that these groups appear to provide the Lodge, it is neglected in almost every aspect.

We will not be returning, and will sorely miss this once unique, extraordinarily beautiful, bountiful (if you don’t want “skunks” and nature, don’t stay in the country), and special place.

While we recommend Vista rooms below, because of skeet shooting, the peaceful setting of these rooms is disrupted by gunfire from skeet shooting and the advantage that Vista rooms once offered of hiking out from there is marred by construction debris, old furniture and now bright orange piles of pieces of clay pigeons that litter this once pristine landscape--some of it right along the sides of the creek bed. Shame on them for making this a trash dump. Is anyone minding the store?

Room Tip: Vista rooms at top of property provide lovely views, plus hiking out from there was nice.

My husband & I really enjoyed our stay. Our room was located on the ground floor which made it very convenient. The grounds are beautiful & we found the experience to be very relaxing. The room was very well appointed & we loved the gas fireplace. It was also great to be able to take a short stroll to their restaurant were we enjoyed a lovely dinner. It is only a quick drive (5 min) from the Plaza in Santa Fe. We live 45 minutes away from Santa Fe & usually do an overnight stay twice a year - we will definitely stay there again!

We stayed here for a couple nights during a power outage at our nearby home, and while there were good and bad things, I was mostly struck by how much un-realized potential this resort has. The location is perfect for those who don't want to be in downtown Santa Fe (which certainly has its own advantages) and are looking for a more western ranch type of feeling. It only takes 5 minutes to get to the Plaza from here, but the setting is beautiful. The grounds include numerous historic buildings (including a very cute chapel), and there are great activities like horseback riding, hiking, swimming, and a spa. It seems like a great place for kids to explore. Additionally, all of the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful.

Unfortunately, while the suite we stayed in in the main building was large and has some charming historic details, it was very tired and worn. I would liken the quality to a run down Holiday Inn, though everything was very clean. I think some of the other rooms around the property have been renovated, so you may want to ask about that. The problem, though, with some of the other (newer) buildings around the property is that they look like they were just sort of thrown into place, without consideration for the overall design.

With a major renovation, and better focus on the historical charm and great setting of this property, I feel like it could be a real gem in Santa Fe.

I recently stayed in a traditional room in the main building. The restaurant is top shelf. All of the staff went out of their way to make me comfortable and welcome. The ambience of the property in its entirety is relaxing. However, the property is in need of repairs and upgrades. The price of the room in low season was too much for the condition of the room. The carpet in the hallway and stairs is worn and needs to be replaced. Despite my complaints about the room, I still enjoyed my stay and felt refreshed when I left.

I would recommend staying here, but would ask questions about where my room would be and the condition of the room before I booked.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In August of 1851, a Frenchman, Jean Baptiste Lamy, arrived in the NM Territory as the first Bishop of Santa Fe. Here he built a private retreat; his chapel still stands today, now on the national register of historic places. After Lamy's Death, the land was acquired by the Pulitzer publishing family as a private vacation retreat. In 1917, the Thorpe family from Denver fell in love with these pristine acres, bought the property and developed the first resort in the state. Today Bishop's Lodge comprises 15 lodges for a total of 110 rooms ranging in sizes from 250 sq feet to 450, not to mention a 2000 sq foot Presidential Suite. Many of our rooms feature fireplaces and the majority all have outdoor access to patios, lawns or balconies. Our ShaNah Spa and Wellness Center which opened up in June of 2002 is a sanctuary where one can take time out to be nurtured by Mother Nature, guided by ancient wisdon and touched by angels. The experience may change your life. Other activities are abundant such as: trap/skeet shooting (offered to groups of 10 or monmre roomnights), horseback, pony trail rides, hiking, mountain biking, fitness center, excercise studio, outdoor pool, whirlpool and tennis to mention a few. Bishop's Lodge is located just 3 miles from the Historic Santa Fe Plaza. Complimentary shuttle service is provided by the lodge at scheduled times daily. ... more   less
