One of our favorites in Santa Fe. We so often fall to our favorites - Hummus plate (the best hummus in SF), coconut chicken curry, and grilled marinated beef kabobs, but so many other items are great: stuffed phyllo, island spice coconut chicken stew, grilled jerk organic chicken, goat stew, and especially the Moroccan lamb stew. Their chicken is always tender, never seems to be the fattened standard store stuff. The Spiced Hot Chai is by far the best in town (not from a mix) and the Jamaican Hibiscus Iced Tea is a favorite. Their soups have won soup competitions for years. We love the sweet potato fries; the curry dipping sauce is the best! The Kenyan roti and ugali is great (my wife lived in Kenya briefly). These are choices we can directly vouch for. The staff has been around a long time - and remain friendly, so it must be a decent place to work. The chef is from an island off of the Kenyan coast; the menu is termed "African and Caribbean". It might be a little out of the ordinary of "meat and potatoes" for some diners - but try it, you'll find something you really like.
We sat down at 5:30 and the place was full with a line by 6 - on a Monday night no less The diners were an eclectic diverse group of patrons. Our order was taken promptly with a little attitude to remind us of who's important. Two appetizers and 1 entree was enough for the two of us. The plantains were soft and well caramelized and the sweet potato fries were can't stop eating good. I wish I could recreate the garlic, chile, mayo dipping sauce. Goat Stew was a nice change of pace, seasoned with Caribbean flair. The only disappointment was something I love to eat, the Roti. It was greasy and didn't have much flavor a few bites were enough. Dishes which looked delectable were coming out of the kitchen at a decent pace considering how busy they were. It took a little longer than usual to get the check but everyone was bustling and we didn't have to wait too long. I
You have to stop by Jambo if you are in Santa Fe. Jambo has the best Jerk Chicken I have ever had! The Curry Chicken wrap is a great meal on a budget. My wife loves the Peanut Stew. Make sure to stop at the shop he has down the street to get some spices to take home!
Picked up the sampler platter and crab cakes with a side of ugali and curry sauce! Will be three meals, delight. Goat stew and lentils with rice and chapati! PERFECT. Lots of new menu items, very yummy looking special, most wonderful staff. Should have gotten a ginger beer! I'll be back, ate logo, I da go walka, I da com. Dis place sabi boh.
