My husband and I stayed at the Brackenridge House for one night in April 2012. We wanted to stay somewhere within easy walking distance of the city. Our breakfast was great. The room was lovely with a sitting area/kitchen in addition to the bedroom and bath. The neighborhood is very attractive. It was about a 15 minute walk into the middle of San Antonio. It was just what we were looking for.

My wife and I stayed at the Brackenridge House B&B for two nights in March 2012. We wanted to stay somewhere that had a lot of character and was in easy walking distance of the city centre. We stayed in the Mockingbird suite and were extremely impressed with our stay. In particular:
1. Everything was a real pleasure with the owners Roland and Lilly. They are great hosts and the home cooked breakfasts are great. I really liked that they are very organised and make everything clear and easy, but nothing felt regimented or formal so it was an ideal combination.
2. The room was a real treat - a lovely old style with some really nice furniture. There is a kitchen room, a spacious bedroom and a bathroom. All furnished to an excellent standard. There were complimentary sweets and drinks (beer/wine/sherry/coffee/water etc.) which were very nice touches - we appreciated them.
3. The location of the property meant it was easy to get to after collecting our hire car from the airport. It's in an attractive area and on-street parking is readily available (we could have parked at the back of the property too if we wished). It took 10-15 minutes to walk into the town - it's an easy and attractive walk along the river.

Two points for possible improvement would be:
1. There was no kettle in the room, so being English we were caught a bit short for cups of tea. We didn't bring this up with the owners as it wasn't really an issue - we were happy with coffee. I suspect a kettle would have been supplied if we had asked (or perhaps it was there and we just didn't find it)
2. For some reason, trains sound their horns all the time in Texas, and you can sometimes hear them from the room. Complimentary ear plugs are provided and resolve the issue so it was not a problem for us, but if any of the people who run the railroads in Texas read this - please shut your trains up because it must be a real nuisance for residents of the area.

Overall, we were delighted with our stay. If you want sterile and institutional try a chain hotel, but if you want friendly, comfortable, sociable and full of character then you really should give the Brackenridge a go. We loved it.

Room Tip: Just speak with Roland or Lilly and they will advise a good room for you. They are great hosts.

My wife and I and another couple visited San Antonio for the first time and picked this place off the internet. We spent five days here, and enjoyed ourselves immensely. We were in the Bluebird room, which is one of the smaller rooms, but still had a separate sitting area, small refrigerator and microwave.

Lily and Roland were most gracious and, although they had to go out of town while we were there, they left us in the capable hands of Sue and Benny, who were the inn's former owners. The breakfasts were delicious and the service outstanding

The location is in a historic neighborhood with many large older homes. There were a number of good restaurants within a couple of blocks, and the Riverwalk and downtown were walking distance as well. The only thing I would caution is that there is a railroad track not far away, and the trains blow their whistles often. For that, they supplied us with earplugs. We would certainly stay there again should the opportunity arise.

Room Tip: The Mockingbird room has a larger sitting area and a large outdoor porch as well.
