“Lovely tho pricey”

Stayed here for a one night treat whilst visiting friends in Houston. When we first arrived at 3.15pm we were told that only one of our two rooms was ready but that we could all use that and we would be called when the second room became available. We trotted off to the room and found that we were on the first floor and had no view at all. All that could be seen was a grassy slope up to the path to the car park. Not very impressive for $300 a night, particularly when the two bottles of water on the hospitality tray were $1 each.

We got into our swimmers and went off to the pool. Not a bed to be had unfortunately and we had to make do with a table and rather uncomfortable metal chairs. The drinks attendants were very nice and after a couple of drinks and a dip in the very nice pool the chairs didn't seem quite so hard.

We were called to be told that our second room was now ready and we headed back to reception. This was where we struck lucky. Someone had let our second first floor room go so we were offered two new rooms on the 6th floor. Much, much better. Both rooms had lovely views of the surrounding countryside and lo and behold free bottles of water!

We ate dinner in Brannon's Cafe and had a very nice meal. The service was a little slow but our server, Andrew, was so lovely that it really wasn't a problem. We ate in Brannon's again for breakfast, and although the buffet was very nice $105 did seem a little excessive for just 4 people. We also were not told that we could have ordered fresh waffles from our server as part of the buffet, this info came to us as we finished eating and overheard the folk on the next table enquiring exactly what the buffet included. Would have been helpful to have been told this from the outset.

The complementary late check out was very welcome as this allowed us to have a lounge at the pool for a couple of hours before we had to get ready for the off. As we got to the pool at 10.30 we also managed to bag some beds too!

All in all a very nice stay, though I think we may have felt differently had we not been elevated from the dungeon level.

Room Tip: Refuse a room on the first floor. The 6th floor is much better as you will get a view.

Our April 2012 five day stay did not get off to a good start. We arrived at 3 p.m. and were told by a less than friendly room clerk that our room was not ready and that she did not know when it would be ready. We cooled our heels in the lobby for an hour. A curt parking valet demanded the keys to our car while we waited for our room, and he wasn't very nice about it. Meanwhile, we tried to locate three other groups of family members arriving separately. We tried to reach our daughter and her family, who were said to have checked in, but could not get them on the house phone and the less than friendly clerk refused to tell us her room number. Our daughter-in-law and one grandchild arrived in her car but were not allowed to check in because the reservation was made by her husband, who was arriving later with another grandchild. So another wait in the lobby deal. By this time we were all sorry we'd chosen this resort, which seems to be oriented to convention business while individual family guests get short shrift. Once we were all in and settled things did improve. Most of us stayed in the Casitas. Its furnishings were worn but serviceable while the carpeting was badly in need of cleaning. However, at almost $500 a night (including all the various taxes and fees) we were a bit disappointed. The grounds were immaculate, as was the golf course. The bellmen were friendly and the room service was excellent. The food was excellent and the service fairly good at Francesca's Restaurant, but the service in Brannon's Cafe and at poolside was terrible. You cannot expect little kids to wait an hour and fifteen minutes for their food to arrive. This is particularly inexcusable when the the restaurant was never more than one-third full of patrons. Formerly in the food service business myself, I recognize gross understaffing when I see it. Unfortunately I never met Food and Beverage Manager Philippe Wilhelm, about whom other reviewers have kind words; my words to him would have been less than kind. Our last family reunion vacation in Texas was at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort near Austin. I recommend it over Westin's La Cantera.

A note on safety and security: All Starwood hotels make it a rule to never release the room number of any guest in the hotel and to only allow the guest whose name is on the reservation access to room keys. We also check IDs before giving out replacement keys. We take the safety of our guests extremely seriously, and our security policies are designed to protect that.

Stayed here in April 2012 for the first time, for a convention held in the hotel. My room is great, with two balconys and doors that open for fresh air. The staff has been wonderful, the food great. Ate two meals in the bar with a huge TV screen watching playoff hockey and basketball games. I did not golf but my collegue did, the course must be beautiful and worth this hotel as a destination by itself. They handeld a 500 attendee convention, all the food and demands, very easily and quite professionally. I will return here on my next trip to San Antonio.

We highly recommend this hotel. I only had one complaint during our week long stay here. Every single person we encountered at this hotel displayed graciousness and true professionalism. The first person I'd like to mention is Philippe Wilhelm. He is the Food and Beverage Manager. We met him in the main hotel bar while playing shuffleboard on our 2nd night. He found out that one of the kids we were vacationing with was celebrating here birthday. That same evening, birthday cupcakes sent to the birthday girl's room. It just got better and better as the week went on. Philippe had many dining recommendations, and not just within the resort. He was spot-on with everything. He arranged our reservations and greeted us at each location with big smiles, and often joined us at our urging. This person was a pleasure to be around. So much so, we exchanged info so as to hopefully reciprocate if he ever comes to Seattle.

A couple of other people worth naming are Hanna who works in the main resort bar (where the shuffleboard table is). Excellent service from her. If I owned a restaurant/bar, I'd want my wait staff to be like her. Also, Cody, who served us at the poolside bar. Another example of above and beyond service!

Kudos to whomever hires/trains these people at this Westin! (It was probably Philippe!)

I mentioned that I only had one complaint. By the way, this was out of the control of the resort. My only complaint was about the flies outside around the pool areas. Apparently, the result of a wet Winter and warm early Spring. Bring bug spray... it seemed to ward them off.

I just got home from a five day trip at the Westin La Centera Resort and couldn't wait to write my first trip advisor review. Big thanks to PHILIPPE WILHELM, Director of Food and Beverage at THE WESTIN LA CANTERA RESORT for being such a wonderful host. I was in a group of three families that travel together often. We all agreed that Philippe provided the best customer service we have collectively experienced. Our party felt like VIP's all week with him as our host. Philippe went out of his way to recommend activities and dining venues for us daily. He would then go out of his way to meet us at said venues to see to it that we were given top notch service. He was so kind to spend time with our group getting to know us - helping to select a good wine, introduce us to the chef, premium seating, flatbread options for the kids, a library to play board games, arrange shuttle service, visit us poolside, offer shuffleboard tips, and just a lot of fun to be around. Philippe made our vacation special and we truly appreciate his hospitality. On a side note, Cody at the pool was quick to get us cold beverages and meals, while Hannah was equally exceptional and enthusiastic serving our large group in the bar. What a great trip and we owe it to the Resort staff. Well done! Thanks again.
