Putting in the toll booth and closing it down at 10:00 PM is the best thing to ever happen for Millcreek Canyon and those of us that love it so much. Although there are lots of improved picnic spots it remains relatively quiet and peaceful, most of the time, but especially in the mornings. The fees collected help keep the riff-raff out and facilitate keeping the picnic areas well maintained and clean. Long gone, thankfully, are the formerly wild "keggers" I used to see up there regularly many years ago. It is now a completely safe family environment. I love riding my bike up (and screaming down) the canyon, sometimes all the way to the top (9 miles from the mouth) and beyond on several great trails. If you go up (the trails) far enough absolutely breathtaking views are available along the ridge line looking down into The Canyons on the other side. Still plenty of wildlife around to enjoy. Stay away from "Dog Lake" on late afternoons or weekends in the summer however, as the place is literally overrun by dogs and their owners. The last time I was there I counted 27 dogs at the lake and then another 52 heading up the trail as I was hiking down. I like dogs but it gets insane with that many different canines in so relative close proximity, even saw a fairly serious dog fight where the owners had a difficult time stopping it. My favorite thing to do is to start (get a ride) way up at Guardsman's Pass in Big Cottonwood Canyon then ride down the ridgeline past Desolation Lake (beautiful view) all the way to the trial above Millcreek Canyon, then down the canyon and back home in Holladay. I love all seven canyons along the front for different reasons, but most fond of Millcreek Canyon.
Odd days are dog days. Dogs are allowed off leash! Parking can be an issue because this canyon is popular.
My cousins who live in SLC recommended this hike. We did the desolation trail which was a very short hike but really lovely. A bit difficult in several parts and turns due to snow and we didn't have chains under our shoes so we were sliding a bit but we enjoyed the hike thoroughly. The paths are very narrow so one has to be a little careful but we saw lot of people with their dogs with no problem.
The views are simply incredible and breathtaking. This was our first hike with snow ever so it will be something to remember for a long time. Highly recommend for those who want to take a nice easy hike under 3 hours.
I went running/jogging here one evening at sunset and it was really beautiful. Quiet, serene, great views of the mountains and greater Salt Lake.
Great drive at anytime - Winter access to cross country ski and snow shoe hiking - Summer get out of the valley heat and hiking - Fall leaves - Pet friendly with alternate day off leash
The views are amazing there is a hike for every level of experience. I love the fact on certain days you can take your dogs
