This is spot where Macon was founded.

Fort Hawkins was a fort built in 1806-1810 in the historic Creek Nation by the United States government under President Thomas Jefferson and used until 1824.

Admission is - currently - free. There is plenty of paved parking and a very nice office.

Yes thee is a large locked fence around the fort - but it is OPEN during its business hours - just go in the office and the very nice staff will give you a guided tour.

I found the staff to be very nice and this to be a fun stop.

Fort Hawkins is where Macon started and is a significant historical site. What looks like a log cabin (needs a better sign from the road) houses a small museum and is where your tour begins. A guide will lead you to the rebuilt tower (1930's) and show you around. There are three levels requiring stairs but worth the trip. There is no charge for admission or the tour but I highly recommend a donation to keep this place open. Unfortunately tours and access to the tower are only available on Saturday and Sunday but are well worth the effort.

The Fort does not seem to be open to the public, not that there is much to see anyway. There are some storyboards which give the background to the fort.

We had spent the day at Ocmulgee (1 mi away) and decided to stop. So glad that we did!
The visitor center has an impressive collection of artifacts. The volunteers are amazingly polite, helpful and knowledgeable. The fort is a reproduction, built in the 30s, but is a great place to visit.
It is FREE (but donate because that is the source of funding to operate and make improvements).
It's currently open only on the weekends.
Highly recommended!
