This hotel is ideal if you want a nice hideaway in Maui away from the crowds, that has no kids, a spacious suite with fridge / freezer, sink, microwave, separate bedroom / living room and incredible great food.
The room is nice as the bedroom can be closed off from the rest of the suite. We had an ocean view suite that really had a nice view from our balcony of the ocean and three islands.
We spent a lot of time at the pool. It is a very chill environment. The bartender is awesome. Super nice guy, attentive, entertaining, and educational. The waitress at the pool works her butt off, covering the entire pool by herself, yet we never waited to be helped with food or drinks and everything was perfect.
This hotel is really perfect for my wife and I. However, it may not be for everyone. There is a tradeoff to being up the hill and off the beach. As others mention, the ocean front rooms are directly above a road. its not a busy road, maybe a few cars a minute at peak times, but you do hear that road noise if you are on the balcony. But one thing we didn't think of is you don't hear the ocean. You are too far away, so if listening to the ocean at night is important to you, then you may want to consider a beachfront hotel. (tradeoff this for volumes of people and kids...)
Next, the service here is fine. My wife and I never had any issues, and we were happy with the level of service. However, if you are someone who writes tripadvisor reviews by starting off with "For the money we paid, we expected to be treated..." then don't come to this hotel. While the service level is perfectly fine, it is not over the top. Two areas where service was not over the top, neither of them bothered us but they may bother you. When you arrive at the pool, there are towels that are used as lounge covers. These towels are rolled up nicely on every chair, and there is cold full water cooler thermos under every umbrella. you can sit at any open chairs or any open cabana. However, there is no one there that runs up to greet you and unroll the lounge cover for you or get you a towel. For us this is fine, it makes the pool area even lower stress and chill, but others may expect more. Next, there is no full time doorman. The kids that work as bellman work really hard and do a great job. However, they are a little understaffed at times, so we gave up on valet parking and parked the car ourselves. it turns out its a shorter walk to our room from the parking lot than the front of the hotel so it doesn't matter. But I would expect a full time person to greet guests 24/7 when they pull up. We arrived at the hotel at 11:30pm to check in for the first time, and it was a little weird for no one to be there, and it wasn't really clear where to go...
Lastly, the pool area has no view of the ocean. Its an awesome pool, and a great environment but being there you have no idea if you are in Maui or palm springs...
Finally, if this is your first time to Hawaii and you want to experience the ocean and beach, this may not be the right place. But if you are an experienced Maui traveling couple without kids, that wants an oasis to relax, have a few drinks and eat good food between island activities, this is likely the right place for you.
