Grand Wailea - A Waldorf Astoria Resort

We stayed at the Grand Wailea from Nov. 12-17. It was one of the best vacation hotel stays we have ever had.

My 4 year old loved the pools. Food and sunset at the humuhumunukunukua'apua restaurant was very good.

Housekeeping came in a serviced our room 2-3 times/day.

We got a great rate on Hotwire (<$300).

Only bad thing was that restaurants in the hotel were very expensive (Maui in general was expensive but Grand Wailea was more expensive). Also, when we checked-in they tried to charge us some kind of $20/day fee for newspaper, parking, high-speed access, phone, etc. This seems like a ripoff. I was able to get out of paying this.

We were very pleased to arrive at the Grand Wailea. The bellman and people at check-in were very nice. Our room was not ready, so we walked around and were amazed at the grounds size and beauty. Once our room became available we were also surprised and amazed at the amount of hair and ants on our bathroom floor. We started to clean up the bathroom, but since we were paying $300.00 a night we decided to call housekeeping to do it. Once housekeeping came up, they cleaned the floor with a couple of washcloths. Now I'm no expert, and possibly someone else had the vacuum, but it may of been nice to actually use the vacuum since the washcloth did not do the trick. We should also say they were kind enough to upgrade us when we arrived. However, if I had a choice I would just as soon have the room I paid for than the room with extra amenities.(i.e. see hair and ants above)
Not to sound totally down on our Maui trip, on day 4 we really felt that we finally did get a clean room. However, I am not sure they are affilated with the Four Seasons.
To be completely honest- nice resort, bad room.

Grand Wailea is a great hotel. The grounds are beautiful. The rooms need some updating but kept very clean with every amenity. The resort fee includes bike rental and there is a nice bike path. The beach is awesome and provides a good breeze for sunbathing.

One note - the birds in the resort area are singing at 5 am - bring some earplugs so you can get some sleep.

I was as a little disappointed with the food in South Maui but Spago & Sorrento's were THE BEST ($150 for 2 with 2 drinks)!!

I always seem to forget how expensive Maui is.

The prices of drinks, food, snacks is ridiculous at the resort so some advice - stop at Costco and load up on drinks and snacks. The lobby bar charges $7 for a Heinken - again stop at Costo!!

My husband and I stayed at the Grand Wailea October 20 - 25, 2005. Our friends got married next door at the Four Seasons. Don't make the same mistake: We should have stayed at the Four Seasons!!!

We were shocked to find our $800/night room at the Grand Wailea was mediocre at best. The bed was hard and very uncomfortable, the décor was dated and falling apart, the drawers in the dresser were stuck and broken, and the carpet was sticky and musty. The Grand Wailea is kid friendly, which is fine, but that's not why it's so noisy.

The tiles in the halls are such that when the luggage carts rolls back and forth at all hours, you can hear this from anywhere in the room…even the lanai! (Clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack…) The Grand was by far the noisiest hotel we have ever stayed in. Please DO NOT make the mistake of staying here. I was surprised to see the positive reviews on this website, and wonder if we're al talking about the same place?! We spent some time with our friends next door at the Four Seasons, and it was like night and day. We were especially saddened to find our friends paid half what we paid for beautifully appointed rooms and an entire hotel that were spectacular.

We had a "deluxe king room" at the Grand Wailea, which we booked through Orbitz. We requested an early check-in, and when we got there they said this was impossible despite promising it to us on the phone weeks before our trip. They were annoyed to give us 30 minute use of a "hospitality room" in order to change into our bathing suits. We waited by the pool to check in, and they first put us on the 7th floor, right next to the very loud-motored ice machine. Our room was terrible.

We asked to be moved and they were rude and inflexible. After several more hours of waiting (hot, sweaty, and unpacked), we were finally moved to the 8th floor. Even though we were a ways from the ice machine, it was still very noisy. Kids yelling at all hours (mostly starting at 5am) stomping up and down the halls, shutter lanai doors slamming back and forth above and below us, and those luggage carts clacking back and forth along the floor outside the room...hour after sleepless hour.

This hotel is WAY overrated. The Grand Wailea puts all their money into the landscaping, pools (which are fun, despite the thousands of kids), and the spa, which is just "okay". Oh, and the staff…twenty or so clustered around at all times, looking bored. The room service was terrible…my $25 eggs benedict was barely edible. The restaurants in the hotel are total tourist traps, and again, ratings on the food: mediocre at best. Stay at the Four Seasons and eat at Nick's Fishmarket (two hotels down from the Grand, inside the Fairmont Kea Lani) which was fabulous!

Bottom line: This hotel may be fine for simple middle class families with young kids who are in Hawaii for their first time, but for seasoned travelers with discriminating taste and high expectations, it's a major let down and just not up to par.
