Grand Wailea - A Waldorf Astoria Resort
Ranked #6 of 8 Hotels in Wailea
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 28 March 2012

We stayed at the Grand Wailea during the 2012 Spring Break period.
As a Hilton Honors Diamond member we were upgraded from a "Terrace" to a "Ocean" room ( Third Floor of Lagoon wing). We did not ask for any further upgrade and were satisfied with the room. It had a view of the ocean, sunsets and pool area. While many would prefer a room on a higher floor, at this resort it would mean more walking. As you will see in other reports this is a large property and depending on your room location you can have a short walk or a small hike. The only negative about the room was that it was not too far from a large mango tree the birds flocked to. The birds were very vocal at sunrise and sunset.
As a Diamond Member we received the 1) room upgrade, 2) 20% off coupon for one spa treatment (used),3) $40 discount at Humu.. restaurant (used) 4) Voucher for 2 Drinks at Humu.. (not used). Because we stayed on points we did pay any room taxes (which can add up quickly here) or the daily resort fee.
Did have to pay $30 daily parking fee plus another $1 and change in taxes. If you are bringing a car there is no other option for parking. So no use quibbling about it. Always called the valet desk before leaving the room and car was ready, with (2) 8 oz bottles of water.
Rooms have an empty mini fridge, so swing by the Safeway, Times Market, or Foodland ( 5- 10 minute drive) for beverages, milk, cereal, bagels and cream cheese to save some money. There is a on site market/cafe, but you will find $6 muffins and $4 bottles of water. If you don't have a car you can walk over to the Shops at Wailea and visit their little market/general store.
While very pricey our dinner at Humu... was very good. My wife and I each had a Filet ( $40). Comparable to the steaks you would find at the your favorite high-end steak house. The $40 coupon made it worth taking our 16 year-old teenage son. All toll, 3 entrees, a side of asparagus, two non-alcoholic bevs., one dessert equals $130 before tip.
Take advantage of the free 1 hour art tour. The curator for the entire Waldorf-Astoria collection is in residence at the property and you will give a nice overview that is not pretentious. Also, take advantage of the free lounge chair and umbrella service at the beach. Generally, I'm not a huge beach goer, but the service here changed my outlook. The beach is minutes from you room, they have a sand Zamboni to rake the beach each morning, crystal blue waters free of kelp/seaweed. If you can't be content at this beach then you should scrap beaches from your bucket list. I guess there was one down-side it is not a beach for surf boarding or booge boarding, just isn't the wave action. Upside is that water is smooth enough to give paddle boarding a try. If you are coming from the mainland your body clock is going to be 3-6 hours ahead and as a result beach activity starts early. People will come down early to stakeout the front row territory early.
As I mentioned earlier we were here during Spring Break, the hotel was busy, but way did we find it over crowded. In some of the other posts you'll find comments that liken it to a busy theme park. That was not our experience.
All Staff was pleasant, courteous, and helpful.
Would we stay here again? On points we would definitely do again. If paying all cash I'd only select for a very special occasion (ie. milestone anniversary). After paying for air fare, rental car, gas, food and activities I would normally look to spend a little less on lodging.
To give you some perspective for our 'free' four night stay we ended up spending $600 on parking, 1 spa message, paddle board lesson, 1 dinner at Humu.., 1 lunch for three at the cafe, 1 muffin and a water.

My wife and I spent just over a week for our honeymoon at the start of August '11. We had an absolutely amazing time. The property grounds are wonderful to walk around and so open and airy. The natural floral scent that hits you as you leave your room is great. The room was fantastic and clean. We had a great view of the ocean. We spent most of our time"in" the room out on the balcony enjoying the sun and breeze off the ocean. It was a good sized room and the bed was vey comfortable.

Other than he beautiful resort, the staff was fantastic. Yes, I'm writing this review about seven months later, but I can still remember most of the staff's names that helped make our stay. Eric from the bell staff was awesome. He said hello to us each time we passed by on our way to/from the beach or wherever we may have been coming from. He even made a few suggestions of places to go for lunch...the more local spots. Adrian, ho worked down at the volcano bar was great and recognized and said hello even when we were just passing through the pool area. Also, Rochelle at the concierge was especially great. She made reservations for us at several great restaurants, especially a sunset view table at Mamas Fish House!

We were down on the beach at 7am, pretty much very morning. This was great as we were generally one of the first ones to get a front row chairs and umbrella. We'd spend the morning out on the beach and after lunch we'd find a spot by the pool. Yes, there are lots of families staying, but we knew this and didn't mind it what so ever. When/if we got tired of the kids running around we'd head over to the adults only pool. We even met two other couples on their honeymoons, one of whom we saw almost every day of our stay and would even enjoy a few drinks either at the bar or poolside. We never really had trouble finding chairs to drop our towels and things down.

So basically it was an unforgetable experience. We ended our stay massages at spa grande and they were fantastic. I am not a big massage person, but it was very relaxing and my wife really enjoyed her massage, definitely agreat way to nd our stay. The front desk even let us freshen up in a hospitality room before we had to head to the airport for our red eye flight. We certainly hope to go back soon...

We've stayed at the GW 6-7 times over the last 12 years but this was our first trip back since 2008. After reading some of the reviews posted I was prepared for disappointment, however, we were pleasantly surprised. I booked the hotel with a travel agent as it was cheaper than using our membership 50% discount. We were greeted warmly by the desk clerk and I was able to get an upgrade from garage-view to deluxe ocean view for very little. The hotel looked a little shop-worn in 2008 but they've done a lot of maintenance since then. The room was cleaner and fresher too. Not a big fan of the $30/day mandatory valet charge but the valets had good attitudes and hustled. The $25 resort fee should be part of the nightly rate but maybe Hawaii is able to tax it at a higher rate! The pools were nicely updated too. A hint - pools open at 7 a.m. and if you want pole position better be in line to get your wrist band and towels to secure a nice spot. If you vacate your chairs for an hour, security will remove your stuff and stow it. We learned to tag in and out of occupying our chairs. Workout room is modern with good free weights but could use a bench press. It's also a little chilly. We don't eat much at the hotel but do enjoy their chocolate chip cookies and the pool side non-alcoholic Cocobans and Lava Flows. The room comes with an empty mini-fridge and they don't have one of those hokey zip-tie minibar access fee deals. We stocked up on breakfast and lunch items from Safeway to save a few bucks. At the pool-side bar, you can buy a special pineapple container for around $14 and get double the refill size during your stay. At Cafe Kula, a GW plastic cup is $1 refills for soda, iced coffee and ice tea after you pay around $18 for it. We tend to eat at Tommy Bahamas next door, Outback up the road, or the delicous ribs at Joe's at the Wailea course right up the street. The beach is free of rocks and the sand is fine and smooth. I think they drag it every night. A great stay for us, probably our best ever and we'll be back soon.

Room Tip: An upgrade to deluxe ocean view is worth it.

We stayed for just a couple of days at this palatial hotel on the south side of Maui. The service is phenomenal. They have many concierge desks for assistance in booking local activities; many of the staff speak multiple languages. Our stay was during the March 2012 deluge which made finding alternative fun activities a must and the Grand Wailea staff did not disappoint! Every member of their staff was courteous, professional, well groomed and clearly had a strong sense of loyalty and hard work ethic.

We were greeted with beautiful leis. By storing them in the room refrigerator they lasted longer. The rooms were large and well appointed. The bathroom was a true on-suite with plenty of room to shower, soak and have mutliple people prepare for the day or evening. The turn down service was unobtrusive.

The grounds were wonderful. The many pools and waterfalls were a delight. The cave bar half way down the mutliple mini pool slides was great fun. Although we are beyond the need for a children's club their facilities looked terrific! During the evening we took advantage of the sheltered outdoor ping pong table.

The restaurants were very tasty offering some local Hawaiian and Polynesian options even for breakfast. The wait staff remembered your name.

I wish they had self parking as the daily valet parking is steep ($30/day). That being said the service was prompt and they always put fresh cold mini bottles of water in your car.

If you want to feel pampered the Grand Wailea is definitely the place to go.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors have the best views. All rooms appear to have balconies..

There's so many mixed reviews on this hotel, but in my opinion it's still a "Grand" hotel and superb customer service! We here the second week in March and this was our second time visitng this property (first was 10 years ago). We did use Hilton points for our stay, so the $30 mandatory valet daily feel didn't rub as bad if we were also paying regular room rates. They should offer a self-parking option. However, right from the start, the service was outstanding. Valets and bellmen work hard on pleasing and informing you! We always called down for our car and it was always waiting with cold water for you. They said they we're sold out, but I recall this hotel being busier in the past. We could always find chairs, especially around the adult pool. If you don't have younger kids you might not want to be around the kids pool anyway. One freebie of the Grand Wailea is they do NOT charge for chairs and umbrellas at the beach and they set them up for you! I know some of the neighboring hotels charge by the day or hour for this. Cabanas on the property are another story, not sure who can afford these, but for $350+ a day you can enjoy one.

We were able to get upgraded to a partial ocean, which really was a full ocean room, great location overlooking the chapel and the lawn where they would set-up events (corporate parties). It was great entertainment watching the weddings and hearing the free music of the parties. Everything was quiet by 10 PM. Fabulous pictures of the beautiful Maui sunsets were also part of the nightly entertainment.

Our room was not dated and really couldn't complain about any aspect of the hotel or grounds...yes the adult pool has some tiles missing like some mention, but I'm sure down the road they'll overhaul it. Sure doesn't detract from enjoying it. It is a busy place though and for those wanting seclusion or smaller boutique size hotels they probably should look elsewhere.

Overall, I would not hesitate to stay here again...even if we were paying. Front desk, valets and pool and beach workers always gave 100%. Maui is expensive and Wailea is really expensive, just know that ahead of time. Grand Wailea still has a WOW factor, especially their lobby!!
