“Excellent Food in lovely location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2012

This was my first visit to the restaurant which is set on the Esplanade in Penarth and benefits from a lovely aspect looking out over the Bristol Channel and the famous pier.

The restaurant is set up from the pavement in a nicely refurbished building with big windows and a small terrace which will be perfect in the summer. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere of quiet confidence with a good choice of food and a reasonable wine list.

The service was pleasant and helpful without being intrusive. The menu offered a good selection of starters and main course offering with good quality ingredients. I had mussels to start which were freshly cooked and plump and tasted heavenly. My main course of rare steak was cooked exactly right and tasted really good with some fresh chunky chips and a Bearnaise sauce. my family went for the slow roasted pork which was extremely tender and tasted very good with no fat or waste.

The desserts were limited but the double chocolate tart and Pecan tart hit the spot with the ladies.

Overall an enjoyable experience and I thought a reasonable cost of about £35 per head including drinks, wine & service. Will definitely return!

“Yet another warm welcome and excellent food at The Fig Tree...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2012

I cannnot praise this restaurant enough ... excellent food (this time during the Vegetarian Special week with David Tomlin), friendly and efficient service and yet another warm welcome from all the The Fig Tree.

The food was perfect and, despite not being a "veggie", I enjoyed every mouthful ... the tastes were superb. I had "Spring rolls, dipping sauce & wilted spinach salad" to start, followed by "Welsh ale & mushroom open pie with swiss chard gratin, pea mint quenelles & mushroom gravy" and ended with a dessert of "Rhubarb & ginger bread & butter pudding with rhubarb compote".

Well done to all The Fig Tree (and Mr Tomlin)!

We visited on the day of Penarth Festival, it was very busy but we got a table in the roof top garden. Nice BBQ choice and a beautiful sea view, who needs to go abroad!!

“Friendly with excellent food and a good view!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 February 2012

Go hungry! You will have to wait while your food is cooked but is well worth it, slightly limited choice on the lunch menu but very good value. Great friendly service with a smile. My third visit during the lunch hour, have been recommended to visit in the evening, which I must get round to.

Mike C, Owner at The Fig Tree, responded to this review, 28 February 2012
Sorry about this. We did have a problem with wasps when eating outside for a few days last summer. I did try speaking with the wasps but they ignored me. I then spoke with the council who came out promptly and destroyed the nest, which was situated in a stone wall of the neighbouring gardens.
