Owner description: This key Civil War battlefield marked the last push north by Confederates in 1864. Although it's seen as a confederate victory, this advance on Washington, D.C. was brought to a hault by the forces led by Major General Lew Wallace, U.S. Army.

We stopped by, even though we had no knowledge of this battlefield. We are glad we did! The information center volunteer was very helpful and the exhibits were excellent. They also have a driving tour of the battlefield. Now we know more.

Thank Nancy S

Had a fine, informative conversation with the staff here. Be sure to visit the upstairs museum for a better understanding of the significance of the battle here before heading out on the car/walk/biking tours. Antietam and Gettysburg are both within easy drive times to help put things in perspective.

The visitor center has a nicely organized and informative museum. A brochure is available with the history and a map for driving through the battlefield. There are markers at the sites with more historical information. It was interesting to learn about the importance of this battle in relation to the defense of Washington, DC.

The Monocacy National Battlefield is a great place to stop if you are touring different Civil War sites in Frederick County. They can give you lots of information about all of the local stops in the area. The upstairs level of the building has some cool displays, explaining about different battles and how the Civil War played out in Frederick County. There are several walking paths leaving from the Battlefield parking lot which are great for exercise and to see the countryside. Even fun for kids!
