I had planned a three hour visit at the zoo and paid $32 + tax for adult admission, plus the cost to get there as there is no public transportation to this area. I really wanted to spend a bit of time visiting with the twin pandas that are marketed all over the city! Not only was the panda exhibit disappointing, but overall the whole zoo took less than an hour to visit.
Many of the exhibits were closed for renovation, so no animals. In other areas there were no renovation signs but no animals to be found. After reviewing my map roughly 15 of 32 exhibits were closed or had no animals. The children's petting zoo had only goats and several families struggled to find the entrance. In the Atlanta heat you had to wait over 15 minutes for a train ride, one train was sitting idle.
The zoo is in rough shape and the staff was not friendly at all, very little engagement with guests. The zoo is in need of a sprucing up and for the cost of admission, everything should be spotless and in full working order. The only animals that were moving around were the giraffes as they were being fed some lettuce leaves at a cost of $3 for 2 leaves. The other animals like the tiger and lions were seeking shelter from the heat.
When visiting the panda exhibit, only one twin was out in their area. All other areas were empty and I understand one of the pandas is pregnant so she was not out. The second twin that was out spent most of her time with her back to us as she peered into the door grid, perhaps looking for her sister; anyhow she was totally preoccupied.
The aquarium cost only a few $$ more and families will truly enjoy that experience. I will not return unless there is a major overhaul of the exhibits and zoo.
