“our half board experience”
Reviewed 8 June 2012

Many people have commented on their all inclusive deal, we thought it might be worth commenting on the 1/2 board option. We paid £275 for the week (2 adults and one 4 year old)and for the price we were very happy. We paid a further £24 for return private taxi transfers. They offer you the chance to upgrade you package on arrival for 15euros a day a head, suspect you could probably get a better deal on line before you come.
Location: in a largely residential area - not pretty or senic but felt very safe. Takes about an hour on the bus to get to Valetta.
Room: no black out curtains and weak airconditioning, but a large room (an additional bed was put in) which was very clean. to note the plugs in Malta are the same as the UK. Plenty of hot water. There was a fridge and kettle in the room but you dont get tea and coffee provided except for the first night in this deal.
Pools: there are 3 one in the basement which was warm and good for the kids, but very humid down there and I think the filtration system should have been on more, one on the ground floor, generally not used as it is constantly in the shade and one on the roof with a very shallow child sub pool, a bit chilly for my taste but fine. No graduated level in the main pool so my little boy was a bit nervous in it. There seemed to be a lot of people crowded around a small area but all in good spirits
Food: cereal, basic cooked sausage one day, bacon the other, always eggs, canned juice and some fresh fruit, and some cold cuts for breakfast. Bring your own tea and coffee if you like a certain brand. Evening meal - the slightly naughty thing they do (for which you only get stung once) is offer you a drink as you go to sit down but they present you with the bill at the end. The 1/2 board option does not include any drinks and that isnt made clear. Drinks prices are 2 euros for a pint and 1.60 for a 125 ml glass of wine The menu is salads, a couple of pasta choices and 3 other hot options, puddings are largely cake. The menu is circa mid 70's but well cooked and plenty of food. We had a very early departure 4 am and the staff put out tea and coffee, sandwiches and cake for you which I thought was a really nice touch.
Staff: a mixture of nationalities all very pleasant.
Clientel: a mixture of young families and retired with a few single parents and older lone travellers. Largely British but there were Danes, French and German there while we were there.

Summary: If you are after a clean, well run hotel for a fair price this is it. If you are expecting high levels of gastronomy or a young "scene" you will be disapointed.

we were a family of 4 adults and a 1 yr old who had family suite. Excellent facilities and even when 1st day bad weather spoilt it a bit we found indoor pool and hot tub excellent until weather improved. Food as good as we've had in any 4 star and entertainment was for mature adults but enough at times to keep us all happy. 50's and late 20 yr olds. not too far from bus station and best way to get round Malta £2 ish for al full day bus pass anywhere on island. approx half hour on bus to Valetta and most places of interest. Soreda staff all very good and not at all like Spanish bar-staff who treat Brits with contempt. They are all very pro Brits and will go back again next year to see rest of island we missed this May.

Room Tip: front rooms better

Just returned from a weeks stay at Soreda,we traveled with our 11 year old daughter,Malta is truly beautiful we hired a car and saw almost all of the Island, however I must be totally honest and fair about the Soreda
we went all inclusive and like lots of other reviews found the food pretty poor, they try hard and put on a roast every evening I think this is because they think the British will enjoy this, the breakfast bacon was disgusting,I found the staff surly and although not rude they seemed indifferent to anyones needs, bar staff continue to wash up instead of serving you and evening meals it was difficult to get your drinks served.
Staff are worked hard and maybe this is the reason they seem stressed
Sunday is a free for all local communities use the hotel to celebrate
Our room was clean but aircon was of little use only worked on low setting,we enjoyed the roof top pool and food was good there, good Internet access in the reception area too
Would return to Malta but would not stay here again

This was our second trip to Malta and the Soreda hotel, we went in september 2011 but the weather was really humid so it made it uncomfortable to travel out. We had no complaints about the hotel in september and still have no complaints except for the evening entertainment, last year the evening entertainment was on the roof top, granted the weather when we arrived was very windy so it was understandable for it to be inside, the entertainment was far more varied last year, still a bit tongue in cheek but catering for all ages.
As last year our room was very good and very clean, the staff are all fabulous and work very hard, the food can be a bit samey but for the cost of the holiday it was very acceptable, the salad bar very good, if we were planning to go to Malta again I would not hesitate to book the Soreda again.

It was mine and my partner's first trip to Malta, we wanted hot weather (tick), some history (tick), good value (tick), easy transport for trips (tick), a clean hotel (tick), good food (cross) and a comfy bed (cross). We went to all the sights, Gozo by Ferry, the few beaches by bus (best beach is Golden Bay), Valletta (again by bus), Azure Window (lovely for a morning/afternoon), Comino (extremely overrated but I suppose snorkelers would enjoy), cave boat trip (cheap if you go by bus and book boat tour there (€4 each)), that was quite nice but not as quoted "the best experience in the world"!! Soreda was for the older generation as per previous reviews, we didn't mind that. When we arrived at around 9.30pm, we had to walk through the main bar to get to our room and were greeted with the smell of an old folks home, not great! The entertainment was definitely again for the older folks, karoke, local average singers etc. The outdoor bar had poor service and little outdoor space to sit and smoke/drink. One bar tender each night for the indoor and outdoor bar was ridiculous, she was serving, collecting glasses and hand washing glasses with a miserable face. A long wait most nights. The area that Soreda is located in is poor and run down. It reminded me of Costa Del Sol in the 70's, poor lit pavements, stray cats, bad, empty english bars. Again, I suppose this suits the older generation but if you're in your 20's, 30's, 40's and want a nice bar/restaurant for the evening, you will be disappointed.

The Chinese restaurant in Qawra near the crepe bar was amazing and very good value, we had to have a night off from our all inclusive evening meal! We went all inclusive and although edible, we found the breakfast ok, the lunch and evening meals were tasteless, bland and really bad versions of Sunday roasts, again, OAP home springs to mind.

The food needs drastically improving. If you have been to a four star hotel all inclusive in Turkey, Egypt or Tunisia then you will have experienced far better tastier and quality fresh food. The best pool was on the roof top, plenty of other roof areas where you can sunbathe all day with sun brolleys and sun beds but take a beach towel, towel hire was expensive at over €4 per day.

Our room was huge, a twin overlooking a courtyard and other rooms. It was quiet at night and very clean, the balcony was tiny but served it's purpose. The mattresses needed replacing and the bedding made us feel clammy - that needed replacing too. Air con was ok. Storage space fantastic, shower fantastic.

All in all in my humble opinion Malta needs a lot of work, more so than most tourist countries, the best thing for me was the weekly bus ticket (€12 each), and we hopped on and off feeling cool and refreshed. With regard to beauty spots, Malta and Gozo has a bit of beauty in some areas but the landscapes and cities/towns are blighted by run down concrete apartment blocks with roofs covered in satellitte dishes/wires. The people seemed friendly enough. Valletta was a bit of a disappointment. Mdina was nice to walk around, very quiet and secluded and has obviously been well looked after but both could be seen in half a day. Victoria on Gozo was a disappointment and very run down again in parts.

A FEW WORDS OF ADVICE...Do not buy cigarettes until your return to airport to go back home. The cigarettes in Malta are €42 for 200, at Airport duty free €25. Also, do not go on any tours/trips with the hundreds of agents throughout the islands. The Arriva bus service takes you everywhere you need to go and quickly - unfortunately, I think they will put the tour people out of business. Also, do not go to Dingli Cliffs, it was a dirt track and you stood on the cliff top seeing the sea and very little else, it is dangerous if nothing else. Very little photographic opportunities, which for us was highly unusual! Again, because there aren't many scenic areas.

For a cheap-ish holiday, it was ok but quickly forgettable and I would rather pay £100-£200 more and see more beauty spots, go to great beaches and have options of seeing and experiencing more history elsewhere.

If you stay at the hotel, keep your expectations low. It is not a four star by worldwide standards. Try to get the cheapest deal possible. Maybe just think of the great tan, I'm hoping that doesn't fade as quickly as my memories.
