We were tired and travel worn when we pulled into Borgarnes and began to look for a place to sleep. We had read in our guidebook that the Bjarg Farmhouse was one of the best places to stay in the area, so we headed through the town and one kilometer north. The farmhouse was well marked and we had no problem finding out way.
The family was still at the dinner table when we pulled in and knocked at the door to the reception. We were greeted enthusiastically and with luck, a double room was available for the night. We were shown to a lovely building, attached to the main farmhouse, and learned later that it was once used to house sheep, right beside another attached building that once was home to the family cows.
We were delighted to see the impressive interior, three separate rooms with a common kitchen, bathroom and toilet. We were the only guests in the sheep shed that night, so there was no issue with sharing. The room held two single beds and a set of bunk beds along with a table and chairs by the large bright window. The linens were crisp and clean and everything was spotless. The kitchen was stocked with everything to prepare simple meals.
We didn't explore the farm property that night as we were very tired, but made ourselves a meal and tucked into the comfy beds after checking our emails on the wifi. We had a fast connection, must appreciated.
The next morning we discovered a fabulous breakfast had been set out for the guests, with a variety of breads, cereals, fruits and fresh home made preserves made by our hostesses mother. The breakfast was so inviting that I even took a photo of the sideboard.
I would recommend this B&B without concern during the off-season, but with the possibility of up to 8 people sharing the kitchen and bathroom facilities during the summer months, I can see it working well only if the travellers know each other. Friends and family would be better able to enjoy the communal facilities.
The owners of the Bjarg have done a terrific job of converting the former sheep and cow sheds into the quaintest of dwellings. They have totally renovated the former barn into a delightful eating area and are presently adding on another building to accommodate more guests. We wish them well.
