My husband and I have tasted beer and visited breweries all over the world. Kona Brewing is consistently first rate, which is surprising because of its location in the tropics. We dined here 3x on this trip. We especially enjoyed the Castaway IPA, the Pipeline Porter, and the barleywine aged in bourbon barrels. The coconut brown ale is a good warmup. Be sure to ask your server what seasonal beers they have on draft. We borrowed a growler (gallon container) from our gracious B&B owner and were able to enjoy fresh Castaway on our lanai. The Growler Shack just outside the brewery entrance enables you to easily get fresh beer to take home. We also enjoyed the food--there are many different pizza combos to choose from, delightful salads (we split the strawberry spinach salad), and we also enjoyed the Imu Pork sandwich. Many dishes are made with beer or spent grains making them different than eating at your average chain restaurant. Portions are large so you can bring your leftovers home and enjoy them for lunch the next day. Although you can get some of their beers on the mainland (they are actually contract-brewed there), there is nothing like tasting these beers on draft at the brewery. Get a table outside if possible and try to go on a night when there's entertainment (often on a Sunday).
