Firstly, I was really impressed that the Sheraton is supportive of a community cat initiative. Feral cats are a huge problem for the island and as an animal lover I found this very distressing in other places, to know that these kitties are all sprayed and neutered and being taken care of was very comforting. They won't bother you if you are not a cat person and for people that are, you will enjoy that these kitties are ok!!!
This is a great hotel for families, to be honest kids woke us up in the hallway at both 6am and 8am but that wasn't the hotel's fault.... Perhaps some signs asking for quiet in the halls? They are concrete so sound travels :)
Manta Ray restaurant was closed when we stayed, but I hear great things.
We will be back to support a hotel that engages in good corporate social responsibility by looking after these cats and to experience the Rays in the Bay Restaurant.

Bed comfortable.

Great pool, awesome slide for kids.

Good vegan food options too, 2 of our party of 6 were vegan.

Think it's a good choice of hotel in Kona.

I had originally planned on giving this hotel 4 stars, but on our final night there we were walking to our car to drive to dinner, and a valet speeding through the parking lot in the dark almost hit us. It was raining and he almost struck us head on had we not dodged out of the way! Very reckless especially considering the dark and the weather. The location itself was beautiful, and the housekeeping staff very friendly, however.

This large hotel is in a quiet corner of Kona. It is on the sea but there is no beach, typical for this part of the Big Island. The hotel is large with wings leading in all directions, making it difficult to get around.
Our room was on the ground floor with a good view of the sea. However, it was close to the pool bar and noisy during the day and night (the pool is open all night and there is a band in the evening). The room was large and generally comfortable.
The biggest gripe is that the hotel is in desperate need of renovations. This is evident throughout the hotel.
There are allo many signs of cost cutting. The towels were small thin and old. The staff in the restaurant are few and cannot manage the crowds. In this regard the breakfast buffet was no more than adequate and the food looked cheap and minimal without any thought. The restaurant itself needed a cleaning.

Room Tip: Look for a room on the higher floors away from the pools

This hotel isn't convenient unless one has access to a car. There is a free trolley service, however it doesn't run at night. This means very few options for dinner. we were here for four nights and our room was only properly serviced once ie: sheets replaced. The morning we left was a series of letdowns. We asked for a wake up call, didn't happen. We asked for express checkout, didn't happen. The shower wouldn't produce hot water. Walking with our luggage towards reception for checkout, two hotel employees walked past us. We waited at reception, and waited. Finally, one of the employees that had walked past us without a word came back and said that she had had to go to the restrooms. On checking my bill, she had charged us for parking, when I pointed out that we didn't have a car. She rudely stated, hire car? After having a bad experience with customer service in the restaurant the night before, I was very unimpressed.

We stayed here for 4 nights and found the resort very family friendly. They have two massive lagoon pools within the resort and the grounds are magnificent. The resort fee now includes car parking plus heaps of extras.

We recommend grabbing a rental car at the airport if using Alamo upon arrival as you will need a car upon arrival at the resort if you want to eat off site. We had a small issue with our toilet but it was resolved within a hour of reporting the issue.

The "care factor" from the resort staff vary from person to person. Some were very friendly and helpful and other not so. Unfortunately Rays on the Bay is closed to February 2018 which was a big seller for us as manta's swim past daily. But the resort is in need of renovation which is good to see that they are undertaking.

If you don't want to leave the resort you don't have to as there is plenty to offer onsite. But I do recommend making use of the free trolley service and seeing what the local area also has to offer especially if you don't have a car.

Room Tip: Ocean views will cost you more but will be worth it

Aloha RozJones,
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your valuable feedback and for staying with us at the Sheraton Kona. We apologize Rays on the Bay was under renovation during your time with us and we look forward to its grand opening in September 2017. Our parking charge is separate from the resort charge so we are sorry for any miscommunication which may have occurred. Our trolley service is an excellent benefit and easy way to get into town and enjoy the wonderful views and sites Kona has to offer. We look forward to being your home away from home in the near future.

A hoi hou,
