“A unique gem of a house that breaths!”

We stayed at the Onion House in April 2015. It was everything we expected and more. Mahalo to current owner Beth McCormick for sharing and maintaining this wonderfully organic house in which translucent panel walls allow for living and breathing in rhythm with nature; quite the essence of Aloha - sharing the breath of life. The house is wonderfully located in a quiet and safe neighborhood within minutes driving from Kona, and the view from the terrace of the sun setting in the ocean is breathtaking. The trade winds blew through the house night and day providing the best natural air conditioning. While we thoroughly enjoyed The Onion House, it may not be for everyone, especially young children and those not willing to share the shower with harmless water-seeking insects :-) However, for those of us who can appreciate the magic and the closeness to nature - it is perfect! Mahalo

We had been looking forward to our trip to the Big Island and staying at the Onion House to 10 months. Upon arrival, we were quite please with our choice. This unique, beautiful home was the perfect setting to spend our time for a week as we toured the western half of Hawaii. The house is set off from the road and feels quite secluded. The stained glass and overall architecture of the onion house is amazing (I must have taken 100 pictures of the place). Thanks to Beth for allowing us to stay in her awesome home.

We stayed here for 5 nights and it was fantastic! We could hear the waves crashing even though we are about a mile or 2 above the shore, The glass was beautiful! Love the bedrooms and the bathrooms! We cooked and saved alot of money eating in. We will definitely be back! Jeanne and Beth are great!

“More than expected”
Reviewed 21 October 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Right from the start this place felt right, we ran from room to room ohhing and aghhing the whole time. It's mind boggling to think of creating this in the 1960s. I love just thinking of auntie Dofeen wandering around here. The pool and views are lovely and the whole feel is relaxing. Beth and jeanne are amazing to deal with - so friendly and accommodating

“Magic in the Islands”

This magical and spiritually charged home is the stuff that dreams are made of. The imagination of Aunty Dofeen, the vision of Kendrick Bangs Kellogg and all the artisans have combined to create this impossibly wonderful mosaic of stone, glass, translucent panels, and nature into a most magical setting. The Onion House may not be for everybody. However, if you, like me, still believe in magic, you will find it here. Mahalo Nui Loa Beth. Without your love for preserving this incredible dream, the island would have lost a modern Heiau.
