3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2012

We stayed two nights (21 and 22 April 2012) at the Kona Bali Kai in a studio unit across the road from the ocean. The unit was somewhat dated, but with a good bed, spacious, and with a lanai looking towards the ocean (which however was largely obscured by the main hotel building opposite).

Being on a busy road there was considerable traffic noise until midnight, but that would be the same at most of the hotels along Alii Road. The air conditioner was also noisy.

We had a problem getting hot water in the shower until we learned that one has to turn the lever only HALF-WAY on. Turning the water full on only gives cold water.

There is a small rocky beach at the hotel, beside a small public beach popular with the local residents. Not the best beach I have ever seen. The pool is surrounded by hotel buildings, so has no view. It is also kept locked which is annoying. There is a lovely sandy beach a couple of miles further south called White Sand Beach Park, beside the Magic Sands hotel. The morning we were there the water was incredibly blue, and a turtle seemed to be enjoying playing in the waves along with the human swimmers.

The lady at reception seemed somewhat intimidating at first meeting, but she was extremely helpful on the numerous occasions we needed her and we liked her a lot. Thank you Maile.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the mail hotel on the ocean side if you want to enjoy the sunsets.

This place is great if you don't want to be in the 'downtown' area but would like to be close to it. it is a clean place with friendly staff. the beach is obviously super close to you. there is a bit of sand but alot of lava rock, as well as sea urchins, so shoes or sandals/slippers are a good idea. green sea turtles frequently eat in the area and can be seen from the beach, water and the room up above. we stayed in room 408 and there were beach towels, snorkle gear, beach chairs & sand mats, in the closet of the front room. the kitchen was stoked with real dishes, utensils & glasses, as well as a toaster, blender, coffee maker. the place also had a washer and dryer in the unit.
the lanai was the best part! high pub table & 4 chairs to sit at, along with 2 lounge chairs that were actually pretty comfortable.
'Do Poke Shack' is attached the end of the building and there is also a surf/skate shop at the front of the main building/lobby.

Room Tip: 408 was good. quiet and up top so the noise of sliding doors out to the lanai aren't making nois...

Stayed at this hotel with school, on a science filed trip from Australia. We thought we would have 3 to a room like we did at other places, but to our surprise they did not have rooms available for us, and we had to have 6 teenagers to a room. We had to share beds which was an inconevience. The conditions of the rooms were no crash hot, such as when i tripped on the hanging curtain and the whole curtain came off the roof and fell down. The matinance man spent a couple hours having to upgrade to blinds. It was also quite dirty. But there were many positives. Kona is a beautiful place and the hotel is right on the coast, your balcony is only a couple of metres away from the water. The indoor pool was also nice to swim in, in the evening. It is quite far from the town and it a long walk to get to places so you need to organice transport. You also have a kitchen which is handy and lovely people leaving gave us their food, which made it even more fun. It was different than a typical hotel with room service, since we had to do everything ourselves, such as change the bed when we found blood on it, but it gave us the opportunity to bond, and have many fond memories. Would probably book another hotel if i go another time which i will. Hawaii <3

We knew we were staying in an older condo and chose this because of the location and that it had two bed/two baths. But, we were very disappointed with the condition of the condo.

The good: The view is awesome and right on the water. We sat on the lanai most of the time while in the condo so we enjoyed the experience of the view only. The location of the complex is good if you have a car. It is not within walking distance of much.

The bad: This an old condo and showed signs of the years with no apparent updating or de-cluttering . The appliances were old but, working, so I couldn't complain about age. The cabinets and closets were completely full of junk from what looked like many years of just stuffing it in. Not much room for your own items. It was hard to find decent pots, pans, utensils, etc., in the kitchen and I felt like I need to wash everything before use. Lights in the master bath did not work correctly along with the electrical outlets on the master bed wall. We did not ask for these to be fixed as we did not want to wait for repairs to be done instead of heading out for the day, so I can't comment on how this would have been handled.

The complex was also old and dated but okay for the price. The pool was not located in a pleasing place and not relaxing at all. It was also under some basic repairs so there were men around at various times working on it.

The grounds at the water's side were very nice because of the rocky beach. No sand but it was fine for gazing at the beauty of the ocean. If you're looking for a beach, this is not for you. We did see a lot of turtles which was a treat.

We will definitely not stay here again and will look for something much more current and updated. And, less cluttered!

Room Tip: Do not choose #308!

If you want oceanfront at an affordable cost, this complex is likely for you. We stayed for almost three weeks in a unit on the second floor. While the unit was very '70's in decor, the beds were very good; it was FULLY stocked with new towels, bedding, and kitchenware. It had (2) flatscreen televisions. But, the problem with Kona Bali Kai is LOCATION! It's almost imperative to have a car to get to anywhere -- either Kona (three miles one way) or to the other business area three miles in the other direction. My son, who is a runner, found the street (Alii) very congested (dangerous) for his morning runs. I gave up trying for a daily walk- lacking courage to fight the traffic on this very busy street on which Koa Bali Kai is located. Vespas and noisy, big trucks use Alli at all times of day and night - making the front bedroom one for earplugs. The view from the lanai was wonderful. But, we won't return to this part of Kona.
