An old-school classic Hawaiiana hotel, the Royal Kona was recently bought by a young developer who is committed to finish updating a property that is in no way "tired" - merely classic. The rooms are extremely comfortable and lovely, ours having a wrap-around lanai and windows with classic Hawaiian shutters on two sides. The Ali'i Tower elevator is made of solid koa wood, and the lobby is open-air, set in its own man-made lagoon, adjacent to the wonderful Don the Beachcomber bar overlooking Kailua Bay, with a panoramic view of the occasional dolphin pod in the mornings, and the fabulous Kona sunsets . It also has its own natural beach cove/lagoon, with good snorkeling and the occasional honu (turtle), and the luau is visible from the lovely pool-in-the-lagoon. The Beachcomber and the pool anchor the annual Battle of the Barbecue and Mai Tai Festival every August, with BBQ competitors selling tastes of the plates from tents within the adjacent luau grounds, and basically, it's a blast - the Kona manages to be both laidback and chill, but simultaneously coolly retro and upbeat. It is dearly beloved of both repeat guests like myself as well as locals who come specifically for the BBQ and Mai Tai fest - both as day visitors and as guests, from across Big Island. I think that says a lot for the Kona - it's just that special. It's a family-friendly, couples-friendly, friend-friendly, wedding-friendly resort for people who refuse to pay the jacked-up rates at other resorts. She's a grande old dame, and I hope she isn't updated so much she loses her classic Hawaiiana charm. Her aloha spirit is in every detail.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are larger and have wrap-around lanais. Oceanfront rooms give you an incredible panorama of Kailua Bay.

Aloha TA family, love seeing our return guest from NY had such a great stay, again, and had such nice things to say about our resort. Couple things, we strive to ensure all our guests have stellar stays, meet and exceed guest expectations and work to make sure everyone wants to return again and again like so many do. Sometimes we miss the mark, but work diligently to recover, and sometimes guests don't do their homework, and expect champagne on a craft beer budget. I'm glad they had a great stay, and were willing to share all the great things we boast about, and we'll look forward to welcoming them back again next year if not sooner! Mahalo!

I work at a luxury hotel in Sausalito California, so it is both a blessing and a curse that I pay attention to every detail whether I want to or not.
My sister and I were on island to give our other sister a break who is a full time caregiver for our 100% Hawaiian mom. We checked into the hotel that we thought was best due to other trip advisor reviews. Royal Kona was recommended to us, but we chose another hotel. It was wrong on so many levels that we checked right out after checking in and drove to Royal Kona Resort (RKR).
Liz at front desk check in was PHENOMENAL, she welcomed us as if we were family and after hearing our saga, set us up in a room that was Glorious. Pen and other housekeepers did an excellent job with stocking our towels and delicious coffee bags. All of housekeeping was above and beyond accommodating.
And although the location is superb for walks along the shore, and footsteps away from stores, and restaurants galore, it was the exceptional service and Aloha that I found noteworthy.
Our mom is 90 years old with terminal health issues. She stayed with us for a few nights. Liz at front desk set up a roll-away bed, which was surprisingly comfortable. And every staff member could not have been more friendly toward her and us. She felt right at home. Food Serves Myrni, Diane and Liz were angels. We had every single lunch and dinner meal at RKR. On our first eve Sonja was fun and helpful with suggestions. Id tip my hat, if I had one, to the Chef, who created a marvelous menu and quite honestly cooks up one of the best burgers and fish taco's I've tasted in a long time.
The pool was heavenly against the backdrop of the amazing ocean. The sunsets were picture worthy every single night. The live music in the open bar area each night made drinking those Pina Colada's even funner. The grounds are beautiful and so are the people.
The tropical storms were raging and flash flood warnings were posted everywhere. But it didn't matter to us one bit. We were tucked away in an oasis. The balcony on our room allowed us a front row seat to watch the rain and ocean waves all day if we wanted. But downstairs in an open area, they have large orange cushioned seats so comfortable that you never want to get up after sitting in them.
Don't do what I did and reserve a room at any other hotel in Kona. Stay here. You won't regret it.

Room Tip: Room 303. A view of the ocean, the koi pond, the pool, and the sky. It had just the right amount of natural light.

Aloha TA Family, it's so refreshing to know we met and exceeded these guests expectations. It shows when you do a little homework prior to booking, no matter where your travels take you, you too will have a wonderful time. They touched on all the key features we boast about on a regular basis, mainly our kind, attentive and friendly staff. Glad to know they had such a great time with us, we know we'll see them again, when their travels bring them back to Kona. Mahalo!

Hotel situated in a great location next to the coast. Staff friendly and helpful on whats going on and where. Hotel has outdoor bar, pool and a private rock pool just around the corner with waves crashing into the rocks on one side and gentle current coming into the pool on the other. Just off the main strip so plenty of choices to eat away from the hotel should you desire. Rooms are a bit tired and need of a makeover but still comfortable with plenty of room inside with a private balcony.

This is an older resort that is close to the town center. While newer and larger resorts may have a bigger list of amenities the Royal Kona hotel offers all the standard amenities for a price that the others cannot match. I happen to like the architecture and layout. It reminds me of the classic Miami resort style of the 50's and 60's. Its easily managed, unlike some of the mega resorts that are a workout to transverse on foot. The BBQ festival and Mai Tai competition give the place a mid Summer lift, as it gets crowded and the party that goes on is great. The rooms were clean and Island style in decor. They just need to resurface the bottom of the pool as it has been pained a dark color which retains the tropical heat. I recall it was blue tile not long ago. Still, There is a value in staying at this classic resort.

Room Tip: The Alli tower is closer to the pool and bar. Avoid the rooms near the elevators

Aloha TA family! I'm pleased to know our guests from NYC had such a nice time with us. From location, views, island style decor in the rooms, and architecture of our buildings. I'm glad they enjoyed the Mai Tai Festival, and all the amenities our resort offers. Remember, NO RESORT FEES, and you too will enjoy our resort, with the best location and best value in town. Mahalo!
