“The secret alp passage”

Timmelsjoch high alpine road
Ranked #1 of 11 things to do in Obergurgl
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 3 September 2017

The Timmelsjoch / passo Rombo high alpine road offers a series of magnificent views and a nice spot for a break on the top / border between Austria and Italy. The pass is sometime called the secret passage because it is much less used and known than the Brenner pass some 25 km to the east.

You can only cross the pass in daylight hours from 7 am to 8 pm and there is a toll booth on the Austrian side (near Obergurgl) - prices are €16 one way and €21 for a return trip.

Just nip up on the free bus with your hotel lift pass and see the mountains and the views in to Italy.

This was a beautiful road not to be missed if you are in the area. Scenery is stunning and every motoring enthusiast, motor cyclist and cyclist is eager to do this road. We paid the toll of E16 to cross over into Austria from Italy using this road one way. It was definitely worth it as it is very scenic. We stopped at the Top Mountain Museum. We felt that an extra E10 per person to enter the motorcycle museum was rather excessive. It is a beautiful display with lovely decor, very clean and well maintained and I am sure that it is a very expensive to build, but it was not really a value for money attraction for us, taking about 15 minutes to cover. It is one of those things that you do because you know that you will probably never be in the area again and might just regret skipping it, but don't feel bad or that you have missed out if you choose to skip it. The other architectural sculptures along the way are free to visit. Enjoy them rather. Staff at the shop/ restaurant were not very friendly. At one of the sculptures was a stall selling breads, meats and cheeses. There was a very friendly gentleman. There I was able to purchase the Schuttelbrot I had fallen in love with at our Pension. Great find. Thank you. At least I didn't have to go into shops to go find it.

This was just a great experience (also due to the sunny weather). Starting from the touristic village of Sölden I climbed through Zwieselstein, to get to the foot of the climb to Hochgurgl. This is already quite an intense climb. Once I reached the toll-port (as a cyclist you can just drive on), the environment changes to wonderful mountain view where I also encountered some enjoyable cows on the road. Reaching the top, the view is just spectacular, although you are not going to be the only one he will be there. Of course, a lot of people come by (touring) car to enjoy the scenary as well.

If you love to drive mountain passes then should drive on this pass as well. Road is great with amazing views. Even the road to reach the toll plaza (coming from Austrian side) is ery entertaining. At the toll plaza there is a Motorbike museum, ticket was around 10€ (we did not visit the museum). Nice weather is must for any mountain pass since No Views No Fun. Check the official website of Timmelsjoch and you will find all the information you need.
