This was our first visit to Mayrhofen and so we travelled with Crystal and booking hotel, ski hire and lift passes through them.
We booked as a party of 3 - one single and one double room in the Annex at Obermair. I know that reviews for the hotel and in particular are mixed and indeed our experience was mixed. Check was fairly straightforward and we were very pleased with our room. The rooms in the annex are, apparently, not as well appointed as those in the main hotel, and I understand that this is generally reflected in the price. I am not reviewing the rooms in the main hotel. Our rooms were fine. A standard size for Austrian hotels and the standard 'Austrian twin' as a double bed (ie two mattresses on one bed frame - so quite wide, but there is a ridge / crack where the two mattresses meet). The bathroom served it's purpose and the the shower area could have done with a bit of re-grouting or re-tiling, but it was clean and the water was mostly hot. A couple of evenings we struggled to get warm water, but it seems as though this is early evening - perhaps when the heating has only just come on. I didn't find the bed very comfortable - the mattress was maybe not top quality. I also found the bed to be a bit short - not a problem for me but for taller people it might be.
Other than that the room was absolutely fine. What do you want when you are skiing - a cosy, warm, clean room to rest your head? Well that's all here.
There is a little bit of street noise and noise from other rooms on occasion - but I guess this depends on where your room is located within the building. We were on the ground floor and quite close to the entrance to the building, so of course we got some passing noise, but nothing that was a problem.
The breakfast was a good buffet - typical of Austria, with a range of cereal, fruit, yoghurt, breads, meat and cheese. There was the added bonus of soft boiled eggs and either bacon or sausages, fried or scrambled eggs. Fresh juice and tea or coffee was also served.
Although I knew that there was a swimming pool and sauna at the hotel I was pleasantly surprised by it. The pool was lovely and warm and there was a seating area around it. The sauna was in fact two saunas a steam room, a rest room and showers. All spotlessly clean and well maintained. There is also a ski store.
The pool, sauna, ski store and main hotel (for breakfast) are all accessible via an underground passage, so no need to go outside to get breakfast.
The hotel is at the end of town, about a 10 -15 min walk to the Penken Lift. However there are regular ski buses - with a stop outside the hotel and another one about a minute away. If you keep your gear at the hotel then I would say use the bus, but if you leave your gear at the Penken then it's a pleasant walk up - a good gentle warm for the days skiing!
If you hire your gear from Rent for Fun (Kaplenig) then note that you can use their ski depot for a good price - they are right at the bottom of the Penken lift. We didn't do this and ended up paying to store our stuff at the Crystal office - not a cheap option and not available all day. There is also a ski depot at the top of the Penken.
There are a good range of restaurants, supermarkets and bars in the town. We enjoyed a bit of Apres Ski at the Bruke'n Stadl - although this is a only for the hardy (or young!). For a quieter drink the Happy End is small and friendly with a more laid back approach. Our third choice was Mo's bar - lively, live music and friendly. All of these are non-smoking.
Overall we would choose Mayrhofen again, with a few tweaks!

Travelled between Thurs 25th Jan- Sun 28th Jan. 2 adults and 1 child. We flew to Munich and hired a car.
Car hire simple at Munich airport, but be aware of Tolls....I had to prompt the car hire assistant who then informed me about Austrian tolls and how you purchase them ( service stations near the border) €9 for the car sticker which gives you 10 day access. Fines are reported to be around €200 for not purchasing.
Travel time between Munich and Mayrhofen is 2 - 2 1/2hrs.
Easy to find location once in Mayrhofen, as it's near the petrol station as you enter the village.
Free car park, but it is a 'free for all'
Traditional Austrian hotel, with a nice breakfast area.
We stayed in the 'sommer' room which caters for 3 people. Large bathroom with a powerful shower and seperate bath ( for the ching bones). Plenty of space and two large wardrobes. Nice curved window plus seating area and a small balcony with restricted views of the mountain.
Breakfast - Well stocked, serving typical continental style food with a hot section of eggs/sausages/bacon. Plenty of juices, tea and coffee
Hotel WIFI - we had no major issues, but did notice at busy times, it was slower. We got 3 different codes for our party, so 1 device per person.
Spa and swimming pool - pool about 6 metres by 5 metres and heated. The spa area had 2 saunas, a steam room, rest area and showers.( note for UK travellers - It's normal in Europe to walk around/ use the Spa Naked)
Ski locker room available.
Ski bus stop outside the property...bonus. Free to use once you have purchased your ski pass.
As we are at the start of the main (high) street, there are plenty of eating/drinking places scattered either side of the road.
Evening meals - €15-20 for a good meal, with Steaks costing a little more. Beer was €4-5 a pint. Smoking is still a big part of society, so some bars still allow smoking indoors.
Plenty of choice for mountain huts at lunch time, but NOTE - CASH only at the majority of mountain huts

We stayed in the main hotel. This was deliberate based on previous reviews we had read because we did not book a ski holiday. If you are planning to be out and about every day skiing and just need a great base then the annexe should suffice.

Having a room In the main hotel meant that the room was larger, apparently wifi was better in the main hotel too but we didn't use it. We had room 9, great views and we loved seeing what each day looked like based on the weather and visibility. We did take a travel kettle to make coffee / tea in the room which was well worth it as we spent a little more time in the room than we might of done had we been skiiing.

The hotel was comfortable, exceptionally clean and well maintained. Yes a little dated, but really very acceptable. The spa and pool areas are amazing, modern, clean, relaxing and it is really worth using.
Uk TV channels not available but music channels on TV good.

The staff and management were really nice, they were polite and helpful and genuinely cared that we were enjoying our stay.

Breakfast is good, lots of choice, not an English cooked breakfast of course but we didn't expect that. There were eggs and bacon or sausage (frankfurter) everyday and lots of fruit, meat, cheese, bread choices.

We did take the half board option and had our evening meals at the Krammerwitz hotel . It was really good.very good value for money with fresh salad bar, soup, main meal and desert every night. The quality was good. Service pleasant and friendly. We appreciated that it was a lot healthier than we would have eaten had we only had Mayrhofen cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from.

The hotel location did mean a walk into town but it was pleasant and not very far at all. I would imagine in full season some may be glad of the peace and quiet that this gave.

The railway / bus station was very close, only about 5 minutes and from here we took the train to other villages and the bus to Hintertux Glacier

Mayrhofen was lovely and much more to do than some of the other resorts, having two mountains, lots in town and access to the bus and train.

However worth noting that most cafes and bars allow smoking. Not the restaurants or eating cafes, these had nice heated outside areas.
Mikes bar has a separate non smoking room, which was better but if you want smoke free try Movies bar which also serve a great Gluhwein.

we loved the Obermair and Mayrhofen.

We visited 16th dec - 23rd dec 2017 - Flew with TUI hour half flight. Approx 1 hour transfer to hotel. Welcomed by the owner the policehave introduced a tax approx 21 euros but internet and safe box in room free now. It is next to a petrol station but we never heard any noise very quiet. We were in the anex block, decor old but charming. We were in room 7 second floor room adequate altough small. Beds 2 single matteress pushed together as a double; little table and chair; Wardrobe with a mirror on inside door - did smell a bit musty but not really a problem. Shower in bathroom previous review on here stated the water took approx 20mins to heat up. We found it to heat up straight away and was powerful - If you are a stickler for perfect grouting, tiles, and perfect decor this is probably not the place for you. We found it added to the character a traditional austrian hotel. Im sure there are plenty of 5* modern tech hotels to choose from if thats what you want but wont be for the same price. Lovely swimming pool and sauna included in price so take swim wear. Rooms cleaned everyday towels changed to - ok they were not big fluffy bath sheets but they did the job . A slight negative the internet did not work in our room but not really a problem we sat in the comfy chairs in the foyer with glass of wine. There is a TV but no English channels but we went to get away from that. We were on half board basis breakfast lovely self serve buffet type. Choice of eggs hard boiled scrambled fried. bacon and sausages. Fruit, yoghurt, cereal, usual cheeses and meats, fresh orange juice, choice tea coffee brought to you. Evening meal served at the hotel up the road 5 min walk - set 3 course menu (Vegetarian option also) very nice and some of food we had we would not of usually ordered so nice to try something different and salad included too - staff very nice and friendly. Mikes bar fave of ours and we also went Scotland yard pub and the movie bar for the quiz. Note that most of the pubs have smoking so not pleasant if your non smoker - mikes bar had area of no smoking and scotland yard could only smoke in bar area. Average price for draught beer 4 euro. Fave place to go for lunch was a butchers shop near ski lift they sold hot food and beer 2 bottles beer goulash soup, chicken thighs and chips - 12 euros. Town is nice but small and some shops not open maybe because start of the season for them - all shops closed on Sunday. Spar supermarket cheaper than the local one. Now the negatives - we were non skiers we wanted to go somewhere with snow as we had been to Lapland Dec 16 . The town is geared up mainly for skiers so we found there was not much to do. We had lift pass for day 40 Euros for both found that a little expensive as not much to do at the top as it was snowing when we went up we were unsure where we could walk - food drink more expensive. The horse and carridge round the town not really worth the money. We got the bus to the glacier 21 euros for both return nice journey scenary fab. However we didnt go upto the glacier the lift pass to get to the glacier was 37 euros each and then 18 euros each to get in the glacier - the lady said it would take 40 mins in cable car and was minus 19 at the top we did not have appropriate clothing on for those temperatures - we had walk through forest instead only one cafe open. We decided to walk to the next town and catch bus from there lovely walk - no where to have a drink though. Train station approx 8 min walk reasonably priced easy to use. we had some lovely walks along the river and through the forests looked so magical with all the snow. We were told when we arrived that they have not had snow for 4 years at time of our visit so we were very lucky. All in all we had a lovely holiday made better with the snow as it is really geared round for skiers we wouldnt visit again that time of year maybe in the spring. We would definately go back to the hotel and would highly recommend to others unless you want high tech luxery then I dont think it would be best hotel for you

Room Tip: Annex rooms are small and internet not to good in room so maybe main block be better

A great location at bottom of main street and close to station. The place is well maintained and staff friendly. The old part is rather well worn and traditional. The singles are small but we were given doubles as singles which where better but small for 2 people. The rooms seem to be allocated at random so if a bath/shower or balcony are important to you check when you arrive; we had 2 balcony rooms on our details but only 1 had a balcony. The balcony is also wrap-round so not private. Noise from other rooms can be an issue, the walls seem to be made of cardboard! There is also a pool and sauna. The breakfast is a good buffet. I believe the newer building has better rooms but we have never been offered this area. It is my third visit here so it shows we like it.
