“Great central location in French Quarter”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2012

My boyfriend and I recently stayed here on our first trip to New Orleans. After reading other reviews, I booked a courtyard view room in order to avoid any street noise. Though the hotel is only one block from Bourbon St., our room on the 4th floor was extremely quiet and noise was never a problem. The King bed room was spacious, though outdated. We laughed when we saw the ancient TV, but it didn't bother us as we were too busy exploring the city to ever turn it on. I appreciated that even though we left the "do not disturb" sign on our door while out for the day, housekeeping still left a bag of new towels and coffee for us outside the door. The front desk service was my least favorite experience at this hotel. The lady at the desk barely acknowledged us or made any eye contact throughout check-in. She did not offer us a map of the city or point us in the direction of the elevator. The bellmen were extremely helpful and friendly. The first night of our trip, there was a power outage in French Quarter, and when we arrived back at the hotel, a bellman was using a flash light to guide us to the stairwell and up the stairs. All the bellmen were quick to grab us cabs when needed. This hotel is in a perfect location! It is centrally located and a short walk from most places. Overall, it was a nice hotel in a great location, and I would definitely stay here again when I go back to New Orleans!

Room Tip: Courtyard facing rooms are quieter than rooms facing the street.

If you want to stay close to Bourbon street but not hear all the noise of Bourbon street when you go to bed, this is a great location! I cant speak about the regular rooms, but we upgraded to a Junior suite, it was $134 per night which is very reasonable as regular rooms at other hotels close by were close to $200. Parking is $28 per day but that is what you are going to pay anywhere in the French Quarter or more. For the price, the junior suite was great and would stay again.

This is the third time we've stayed at this hotel in the French Quarter. I don't think any improvements have been made in the last 20+ years. The room on the 5th floor had one small window, painted shut, and the sashing was quite dirty. The wallpaper was peeling off in the bathroom. The beds are double/full size and since even the cheapest hotels are providing queen size, this was a major problem for 2 normal size adults. The inside hotel walls need painted and the feel of the entire place is that it requires some TLC. This hotel is corporate owned and there are several others under their management; we will avoid all of them if the St Marie is any indication of how their properties are being treated. Next time we visit NOLA, we will stay elsewhere.

We have been to this hotel every year for the past 5 years. It is close to restaurants and Bourbon Street. The rooms are large and comfortable. You can book near the front if you want a view balcony but know that there may be noise. If you want quiet, ask for a room near the back or facing the courtyard. The front desk can book tours or give suggestions along with maps and directions. If you have a car be prepared to pay around $30 per night that is about average for the quarter. Give yourself plenty of time to get it out of the garage whenever you need it, especially near checkout and checkin times. The garage is usually packed so be patient as it may take awhile if other cars need to be moved. The hotel has recently upgraded the elevator and decorations but not the tvs. That does not bother us as we never turned it on during our trip. The hotel supplies a local newspaper and USA Today but you need to pick one up before 8:30 as they disappear quick. The hotel also has wireless. Ask which name works for your room as there are several.

Room Tip: For quiet ask for rear or courtyard. For a view and local action book a street room. Upper floors...

I rarely have anything nice to say about French Quarter hotels, but my fantastic experience here prompted me to take the time to share my thoughts. The Hotel St. Marie was perfect for my stay: the price was excellent and the location was central to the French Quarter, yet my room was quiet, which -- as I know because I am required to stay in this area frequently for work -- is a quality that is very hard to find. The food at the hotel restaurant was great for both dinner and a quick breakfast, and the front desk service was friendly and accommodating. The room itself was very comfortable, clean, well-equipped and quaintly decorated. This will be my go-to hotel when I'm in the Quarter from here on out.
