“Dowager gets Face Lift”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2012 via mobile

Renovating one of these historic New Orleans hotels is always a risky proposition. How do you update the facilities and retain the old world charm? The Monteleone has accomplished the task. The lobby sparkles and radiates an energy that no doubt stems in part by the legendary Carousel Bar which has been recently expanded. This world famous watering hole has been featured in writing by authors such as Ernest Hemingway and Roy Blount and has to rank as one of the world's top ten bars. The guest rooms are smallish but well-appointed with large marble and granite bathrooms. I was on the 10th floor with a view of French Quarter roof tops. The prima donna in me would have liked 100% cotton sheets and a magnifying mirror in the bath but these are minor quibbles. I can't find much fault with a hotel that celebrates New Orleans' literary past with suites named after Eudora Welty, Truman Capote and Tenessee Williams.

My wife and I stayed at the Monteleone recently for a conference. Conveniently located a block off Bourbon street (and 2-3 off Canal), the old world charm it offers is close to the action but far enough from the noise. As is typical with hotels from this genre, rooms are smaller than newer hotels - but nice appointed and comfortable. The staff were friendly and courteous and the conference facilities were perfect for the small conference (~200 participants) we attended. Be sure to have a drink in the Carousel Bar which offers great music too.

Excellent hotel right in the French Quarter. Great bands playing in the bar. Hope you get Raoul as your bell captain. He's been there 47 years & has all the local knowledge & stories! Close to everything.

Very nice hotel, rooms/bathrooms are small, but it's a very old hotel and that's to be expected. Water pressure was excellent, which is always a nice surprise. Staff is helpful and courteous, service is top-notch. I do wish they would add a hook or something to hang wet towels on in the bathroom, so they can be reused.

First off, this spot is going to cost you a pretty penny. But, you are right in the heart of the French Quarter. We walked to restaurants, bars and clubs and the staff was helpful in recommeding spots that aligned with our interests. Windows are soundproof, so the nightlife of New Orleans won't keep you up to all hours. Highly recommended if you want a splurge.
