I enjoyed my stay, but just be prepared its LOUD! I stayed in the 6 bed female dorm that overlooks the pool area and every night there was merriment and music that went well into the night and the sound filled our room. I can't imagine how the neighbors stand it. And its not really very clean- it looks and smells like it could use some elbow grease and scrub the corners. But there are No Bugs, just dirty from use. But Lots of fun people, and great location for the street car and restaurants.

Room Tip: Ask for the room that doesn't face the pool area.

We stayed at India House Hostel for 4 days back in October and it was a great stay. The hostel itself is a little run down and certainly is in a pretty run down neighbourhood. I don't know what to say about the area; it seemed okay to me, but it depends how high your threshold is for staying in poorer areas. The hostel location besides that is really good, only a couple of minutes walk to the trolley which takes you into downtown in about 10/15 minutes.

The hostel makes its own meal which are fairly cheap and absolutely delicious, as well a really nice cooked breakfasts. There is a really nice friendly outgoing vibe to the hostel and people are always up for a few beers (i'll leave it up to you to decide if that's a good thing or not)

Overall, it's a great hostel, with a great atmosphere - would stay again.

The hostel is in a great location on the trolley line into the French Quarter, or it's about a 30 minute walk. The hostel is made up of some very charming old houses, which were fairly clean, but approaching very run-down status. There was only one bathroom in our house for about 15 people, so that was slightly annoying-- plus it's very noisy for about two hours in the morning while everyone is taking their turn. Though it was clean enough, I think it could be better. The staff seemed friendly enough. You can buy a cooked breakfast until 1 p.m., which was really good for the price. The beds are horribly uncomfortable. It was a good value for the stay, though I would NOT do it again.

Room Tip: If you traveling with a partner, the Oceanview room is good-- it's private with a shared bath.

Great location near Canal Street Streetcar stop, very helpful front desk, good kitchen and commons area. Rooms and bathrooms are typical "hostel" quality. Large common area out back, which is pretty lively and noisy at times. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.

Me and my mate rocked up at the India house and both just looked at each other. it was looked run down and so did the neighbourhood. We walked inside and the greated by a skinny guy in a vest and a bandana. He didn't work there we was just a friendly traveler. We waited about 5mins for the girl behind the desk to return as she was showing other people to there rooms. She was happy singing and all me and my mate see outside....didnt matter this place was welcoming and fun. She shown us around the hostel and then to our room were we would be stay with 12 other people. Everyone is very happy frendly laughing or drinking! I love this place even if you just walk in to see the common area it will be worth the trip!
