It is hard to believe you are on a tropical island as the rush of fresh chilly mountain air enters the car (windows open recommended) while the winding road takes you from Colombo towards Nuwara Eliya, passing Hatton, continuing uphill through wonderfully changing greenery patterns of lush tropical rain forests, meadows and intricately carved various shapes of tea plantations, hanging from the mountains above you.....
When we reached our destination, Senani Bungalow, at 1800 meters above the sea, it revealed itself as an oasis of peace and tranquility. We were welcomed by perfume of lavender and rosemary from it's terrace, before being served our first cup of excellent local tea, under the shade of a Gazebo in the rose garden.
Bungalow is an understatement, as it is in fact a carefully restored old colonial house, as the walk through the rooms revealed bits and pieces of it's history with ancient furniture in place, artifacts, old books and pictures on the wall.....
It was all so much more accentuated after dinner, while having a glass of wine next to the fireplace, giving just the right amount of warmth and coziness opposed to the star speckled chilly mountain night outside...
Only after the night of the most relaxing sleep, recovered by high dose of oxygenated crisp mountain fresh air, one notices that there is no need for AC, no mosquito repellent (no mosquitos!) as well as the welcome absence of other pest, prevalent in the lowland tropics..... A real treat!
Last but not least - our stay was made more enjoyable and memorable by the staff who have taken excellent care of us, guided by knowledgeable and always cheerful Marcus (thanks for the excellent barbecue!) plus a special greeting to Prema, who cooked superb Sri Lankan classics throughout, making us indulge beyond limit...
It was a September weekend we will remember and cherish for good in our memories!

Spent a lovely weekend at this place. Would recommend to famalies and close friends.
My favorite place was definitely the herbal garden where i spent most of my time. So nice, green and smells wonderful. There is also a bbq and a small golf place.
The interior of the bungalow is a story for itself.
A nice old fashioned, colonial style place with very kind and warm staff. The food was excellent. I also enjoyed the fire place in the living room. A perfect place to read.
This place certinaly has a speciAl touch. I will definitely be coming back

Charming old colonial house, nicely renovated, with very friendly staff and great cooking, comfortable beds. Morning in the tea country, afternoon garden tea, evening by a fireplace... What a perfect place to relax and cool from island heat.

I have been visiting Nuwaru Eliya for the past 5 years. Its my sixth visit to the city. This time it was with my extended family from India. we were seven people 5 adult and 2 kids. I must say that this was the best stay that we had over the so many visits. The Guest house is located very near to the town as well as the lake and has been very well maintained. In the garden you will find so many different types of flowers. The rooms are very well maintained with good quality of bed and mattresses. There are enough number of blankets and additionals are available to ensure that you have a comfortable stay during winters. All the rooms have heating facilities. The toilets were very neat and clean. Each room has firewood and you can enjoy being in a colonial bungalow, spend the night chatting with the family with the fire wood. More than anything else, the cook Prema and her husband where the best hosts- very humble, polite and helping. It was as if staying in my own house. even the dormitory for the driver was good. I would recommend this place to anybody.
Dear Senani team,
Thank you so much for looking after us so well. We enjoyed the colonial style of the bungalow, a veritable time warp!
The rooms and beds were very comfortable and the open fire a treat after the heat of Galle.
The food was outstanding. We enjoyed our chats with Marcus and found him to be most helpful with all our queries.
Hopefully next time we will be luckier with the weather.
Many thanks again.
