We were due to ascend from Kandy to Nuwara Aliya at 10.00 in the morning for the 4 hour scenic journey. Unfortunately a train had broken down on the single track line so we were forced to cool our heels on the station for 4 hours, meaning that we arrived at the Grand Hotel at 18.30 instead of just in time for Afternoon Tea, an institution spoken about largely for this hotel.
We received a very warm welcome and were quickly shown to our massive, Victorian bedroom furnished with a huge, very comfortable bed, a massive stand alone wardrobe and a splendidly ornate bathroom with huge, squishy towels. A bowl of fresh fruit, beers and water added to the welcome.
Quickly refreshed after our intriguing train ride rising over 3000 metres, we ventured out to explore our surroundings. Faced with 5 restaurants, one serving for 24 hours, we were torn between the Thai choice or the buffet, opting for the buffet. We made the correct choice as the splendid buffet featured food from all over the world, including a comprehensive Thai selection.
Breakfast was also taken in the buffet section, and we had never experienced such a vast, hot, comprehensive choice. Nothing was too much trouble for the attentive but discrete staff.
I just wish that we hadn't arranged to move on the next day and, if we do return, it will be a condition that we spend at least 3 days in this heaven of an hotel.

Colonial, historical and takes you back a century.
We really enjoyed our stay, which was sadly only one night. Room was clean, well appointed and comfortable. Bathroom a bit dated but spacious. Close to tea plantations, gorgeous views and historic buildings.
We are celebrating our 35th anniversary and were congratulated on arrival in our room which had a lovely decoration laid out for us. Room service delivered chocolates, fruit bowl and cake as part of the celebration. Thank you for helping us mark our special anniversary!

The Grand is a lovely colonial style hotel which features squeaky teak interiors, a piano room, and grand formal dining hall. There are also beautiful extensive British style gardens & lots of flowers were in bloom when I was there.

There are various sized guest rooms in quaint colonial style. The small rooms are a little cramped as are the bathrooms. So try to upgrade if you can to get one of the larger rooms particularly looking over the gardens.

The rooms have nice comfortable large beds and the furniture is dark heavy timber on a very red carpet. There is TV with some English stations and wifi works everywhere although a little slow.

There are about 6 different restaurants to choice format the property from buffet to Indian, Thai and even a wood fired pizza oven outside. The pizzas are great but the Thai food a bit disappointing & the service was pretty terrible the night we went. The breakfast buffet was extensive & delicious.

The service staff were friendly & keen to help.

I would have liked a couple of nights here to enjoy the property & try a couple more restaurants instead of just the one night. Overall a nice experience.

Grand by name and grand by nature in all the public rooms. Beautifully kept in the Colonial style, this hotel feels very special. There is perhaps the best presented buffet I have ever seen, especially the starters and desserts. A very limited offering of wine by the glass is available. Played snooker on one of three 100 year old snooker tables, brought to the hotel by elephant, and maintained lovingly by the gentleman who looks after the snooker room. Our room was described as a double deluxe. Double it was, deluxe it most certainly wasn’t. The decor that works so well in the public rooms does not translate so well in small areas. It would be fair to describe it as a standard room; adequate but nothing more. Then there is the bathroom! Small, scruffy, tired and totally outdated. Not enough room for two people at the same time. The management know this as there is a sign to remind guests it is not a wet room (usually very small). The shower head is so close to the wall it is difficult to get under it completely. Ours was a front facing room, and suffered from intrusive level noise from various events taking place at a local park. On our last morning we were woken at 7.30 by ChriS de Burgh’s Lady in Red. Result ...... we won’t be staying at the Grand again, but may pop in for high tea.

It was worth a stay at this historical Hotel and do walk around the area. One can lounge around in the front garden while sipping a drink and just relax. There are plenty of other rooms to relax and you can enjoy a full afternoon tea.
The evenings are chilly, dress warmly. The Hotel was totally occupied and one needs to eat quite early to find a table you can not reserve. There is always an option to have the buffet. Breakfast is excellent and the service fabulous.
It is a very short walk to go to the Food Court outside the Hotel where you can eat very well. There is also a big lake in the neighbourhood when you can hire a boat, ride a horse, walk in the park etc.
