Everything of importance, food, service, rooms and most importantly the people really couldn't have been better! We stayed a week and could have stayed longer. Joseph and Cicely are lovely, open and generous people with great knowledge and humour. We hope to return.

Among the best places I have stayed in. Location is fantastic - just by the river. Me and my girlfriend spent many early mornings jsut waiting for the sunrise, watching the scenes of the river life - small boats passing by, the chimes from the temple on the other bank.

Advice - bring along some RK Narayan books - you will go back to a Malgudi days era (Yes -yes, I know this is not Karnataka!).

Pros - Heritage rooms (bewarned - it is NOT luxurious, but has character. Kids may not always enjoy themselves if they are used to resorts with games and videogames), TV, Old style furniture, location, food (excellent South Indian food). Excellent value for money. Great company.

Cons - Some furniture is old (Part of the decor, but if you want more modern rooms, there is no choice),

Place is not easy to find (right in the middle of backwaters) so you must take a hired cab sent by the homestay (not expensive - about 2 hours ride from Kochi airport - landing in which by the way, is a fantastic experience - in the midst of coconut trees!)

Fields are closeby so you can take good walks in the fields, along the backwaters, the backwater boat ride was good. We also took an overnighter houseboat - a pretty good experience.

Girlfriend likes birding so she had a great time with her binoculars. I like snoozing so I had a great time in the hammocks in the garden.

By the way, there is a real cool cottage in the middle of a pool with swans. Looks more Thai. Excellent massages by local people.

Please see my review under "Peace, quiet and relaxation" under B&B reviews for Poopally's Homestay.

We had a wonderful stay with such a gracious family, I would highly recommend this experience.

What a great experience it was to stay with the Poopally family. Mr and Mrs Poopally are such gracious hosts and so welcoming of people staying at their home.

The family home is an impressive country house in true Kerala style. Guests can stay in the main house or in riverside bungalows. We stayed in the charming bungalow, it has private bathroom and air conditioning.

The food was a fantastic experience. We are family with most Indian food but never had Keralite food before and it was wonderful, all cooked by Mrs Poopally.

The only issue being that there was often far too much food made for just two of us. Since it was very hot and humid, we sometimes only wanted a small lunch. We asked for only a small lunch one day but was given the same heaping loving spoonfuls of food. It was sort of like being at your grandparents home, lot's of attention, love and lot's of food !!! Not a bad thing, of course, but sometimes a little too much attention paid to us at the table, ie, Mr Poopally constantly putting more and more food onto your plate, even if you've had enough...but it is done with love, that is for sure!

The homestay is on a perfect spot on a bend of the Pemba River. You sit on the verandah of the bungalow and watch the different kinds of river boats pass by.

Go for walks along the river paths you'll see Kerala river life up close, it's beautiful!

The homestay is quite far from town so take anything you might need with you. Alcohol is not served however the family does not mind if you bring along your own.

The Poopallys have internet that will generously let you use anytime.

This was a great few days of relaxing, eating, learning about Kerala life and just chilling out in the country side, it was wonderful, thank you Mr and Mrs Poopally!!!
