We didn't really plan much before embarking for India, one of our daughters said we must go, best place in the world, absolutely fantastic.
So we went, the shock of getting out of the airport and into the city was shattering, so many people, so much chaos, so alive....it's like nowhere else we've ever been.

Anyway, Poopally's, Joseph and Cecilla, time warp, go back 30 years, such kindness, time for strangers, never found it anywhere else, just lovely people. Ok, it's not the cheapest, it's not the most convenient, it might not even be the best, but in all honesty who cares, it's not an hotel, it's an home stay, Joseph is 86, he said Cecilla was 72 ....you can take 20 years off for each of them , must be something on the water.

I feel that very soon India may well crush itself under the sheer numbers of its people, it's quest for individual wealth at all costs and lack of integrated social systems, this could of course just be my Western softness, Poopally's harks back to a different time.

Poopally's home stay is as unique as to what we found in India as we found India to be unique to our Western culture. I just wish we'd gone to Joseph's at the end of our trip not near the beginning, we would have appreciated it more at the time.

As an aside, I drink a lot of tea, the cinnamon tea I had at Poopally's was absolutely the best tea I have ever tasted, if I could drink tea like that all the time I would give up beer and wine.

Room Tip: I don't think it really matters, it's the hosts not which room

We stayed 2 nights and received a very warm welcome from the moment we arrived. Joseph clearly loves to have guests and wants you to enjoy his beautiful home and location.

We were staying in the superior room which had a very large bed on high legs, we slept well! The room had the red floor tiles and dark wooden furniture in keeping with the heritage style of the home. The room was spacious, with two comfortable seats and double doors looking out onto the lake. The en-suite bathroom had a very large shower with hot water.

We had all our meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) at the home cooked by Cicely. Lovely home cooked veggie meals, with multiple dishes for each meal, you are certainly not going to go hungry ... and Joseph will make sure.

We did the three hour boat trip going along the smaller waterways, which we would highly recommend. You see a lot of the local life, more so than on the houseboat trip we had taken (if you can, do both, as equally enjoyable).

Joseph's daughter did a cookery demonstration for us, which was really good for taking a few recipes and tips home ... and we got to eat it all as well.

We really enjoyed the tour of the garden, learning about all the plants, Joseph made this really fun.

Lovely house, lovely hosts, lovely food.

We arrived at Pooppallys and were warmly greeted by Joseph and Cicely. Joseph, who is 86 years young, has lived here all his life and in fact, the place was built by his Grandfather back in 1895 (I believe). Joseph and Cicely are very caring hosts, and looked after our every need throughout our 6 day stay. Joseph arranged auto-rickshaws for us whenever we wanted to go into town, and he also arranged a motorboat to pick us up from the end of his garden, to take us on a 3 1/2 trip around the backwaters and smaller canals.
Our room looked out on the river and was a typical old colonial heritage home type of room (plenty of old dark teak on walls, floors and ceilings). There were one or two things that perhaps could have been better (the water could have been hotter, the lighting could have been a bit brighter) but there was nothing that could spoil the experience of staying here.
The food was excellent and more than plentiful (thank-you again Cicely), and Joseph was always keen to ensure you had sufficient to eat.
Joseph will also take you on a tour of his fantastic garden, full of herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables, and will give you information of what each one can do for your health., and how a lot of them are used in the traditional Ayurvedic treatments. We sometimes stayed in the gardens during the day, just to enjoy the wonderful view, the peace and quiet, watching the houseboats, canoes and motorboats go by, listening to the birdsong and interacting with the schoolkids as they made their way back home from school. It was quite amusing to see them egging each other on to say "Hello" to the strange foreigners sunbathing on the grass.
In all, a great experience, made all the better by the excellent hosting skills of Joseph and Cicely. I would highly recommend a stay here.

This traditionell homestay is located by the waterway in backwaters. You hear birdsong and magic song from the temples in the morning! The owners was very caring about us and arranged a nice boat for exploring the canals. He told us about the plants in the garden and a lot of the food and spices they served came from there own garden. They serve exellent food and we even have a cooking class. The owners is really lovely people!

We have just spent time with Joseph and Cicily at Pooppallys. We can't speak highly enough of the hospitality of both hosts. Joseph arranged a three hour ( it could have been longer had we wished) boat trip of the back water canals. This was very enjoyable. We were tossing up between this and a houseboat, we are glad we chose the home stay. We loved the food, don't go here to diet.
