Had a very similar experience with "lexus51". Our tour itinerary also indicated A/C Deluxe Houseboat only to find ourselves in a dirty and grimy rice boat. Totally different from the beautiful pictures we saw in the promotional website. We too paid a hefty amount for 2 large prawns which we had for dinner. Likewise, there were constant power failures and we had to sleep with mosquitoes. We felt ripped off but the good thing was that the captain, the cook and the mechanic tried very hard to make our stay pleasant. Thanks to them. Had the boat been cleaner, we would have enjoyed the fantastic scenic backwaters which is actually quite awesome especially at sunset and sunrise.

Our tour itinerary indicated that we had booked a “deluxe” houseboat and we were led to believe that this might well be the highlight of our extensive tour of South India. We checked out the Evergreen website – especially the photo gallery and the ‘services and facilities’ page. It all looked and seemed wonderful. If Only!!

I have attached photos of our boat which make clear the gross deception perpetrated by this company (I regret that I forgot to take one of the disgusting kitchen) and the ‘services and facilities’ is little more than a litany of lies and exaggerations. We berthed next to what looked like a rubbish dump at around 5 pm and were told that dinner would be ready at 8.30. We had no idea of what we were expected to do and with the mosquitoes becoming prevalent, we were not inclined to just sit on the boat - especially in such an unappealing location. We wandered around the unattractive local area for a while and then went into our cramped bedroom until dinner which was only just passable despite paying an additional 850 rupees for two large prawns for an appetiser just for myself (my wife is vegetarian).
After numerous power blackouts, the power finally went out for good at 10 pm and didn’t resume until morning. With my side of the small bed jammed against a wall, it was a nightmare trying to get over my wife and use the bathroom in pitch blackness and I very nearly had a serious accident.

If “a picture is worth a thousand words”, then I don’t have to say much more except that the Kerala Backwaters themselves are very relaxing, often beautiful and always interesting and definitely worth touring....except with Evergreen. And judging from all of the other boats that we saw, ours was the worst so we were just very unfortunate on this occasion.

A houseboat tour in Kerala, India is definitely a "must do", when visiting the southern part of India / Kerala.

We hoped to find on a houseboat departing from Kochi. Though, we found that all the boats with overnight stay are departing from Alleppey, approx. 1 1/2 hour drive south of Kochi. You can only take day trips to the backwaters from Kochi.

Heard that the quality of the boats should vary quite a bit, so we did not book a boat in advance from home.
In Kochi we were told that you could just go the harbor in Alleppey in the morning, check out the quality of the boats and choose the one you liked. This would be 7000 - 8000 rupees (Feb. 2012) all incl. for a one day tour (one night).
Though, we ended up choosing to book the houseboat tour in Kochi with Anil Mathews, the manager at Quality tours india as he and his associates seemed very trustworthy. The service provided fully lived up to our expectations.

We paid 5500 rupees for
- Transport Kochi - Alleppey (return)
- Houseboat tour from 12.00 noon - 09.00 the next morning incl. three meals.

Stayed on a rice boat for my birthday this year, wanted to do one night around the backwaters with the whole experience....was rushing around India so didn't have the time to turn up and find a decent boat, took the RG advice and booked through the airport at Cochin...DON'T do it...they booked us into "Alleppey Backwaters" (.com), what we were sold and what we did was two different things. Was still enjoyable, but we had to share a boat with people that were 3 hours late, so they went around a large lake, we did go down many pretty waterways, but not small and very busy like the books say, we had no guide and we didn't stop at any toddy places, most disappointing was that we didn't go very far and actually moored up 100 yards from where we started, what we were sold and what we did was opposite....the only stop we did was a tourist trap to see if we wanted to buy Lobster or king prawns (just under standard uk price) to be cooked on the boat....

Boat was beautiful, so wasn't a total let down, but expensive in comparison to everything else we did, wouldn't say it was worth it...

Next day as part of our compensation we got a small boat for a few hours, so much better, quiet and saw local things, like a wedding and church service, people were friendly as opposed to bored...better backwater experience...

Backwaters are worth the trip, but not the overnight stay, maybe a small boat for two, just agree to see where the boat will go before you commit.

Had 2 nights on one of Rainbow Cruise's boats. Scenery is stunning, once you've left the main lagoon which is full of house boats. Food was amongst the best we have tasted in India. Bed was really comfortable and bathroom was clean. The captain and cook were both very pleasant and friendly. So far so good ... could even overlook the lack of water in our shower. Everything going well until we saw the state of the kitchen and staff toilet...... insulting, disgusting and filthy sum them up. Hardly surptising that I had three days with an upset stomach and needed a doctor at the airport to give me an injection before I could fly.
Since then, we have heard that Michael Palin included the backwaters in one of his programmes and came to the same conclusion as we had. If only we had seen it before making the booking,
