“iLona Lake Resort is now The World Backwaters -A Lake Resort in Alleppey, Kerala.”
Reviewed 28 September 2012

Now the iLona Lake Resort is THE WORLD BACKWATERS -A Lake Resort in Alleppey, Kerala. This resort is a great place for leisure tourists and family vacations. Indoor-outdoor games and activities are simply good and perfect for vacations. The Panoramic view of Vembanadu Lake is just unexplainable in words. Hygienic food, good staff and lots of good memories. Best wishes, Kartik Rath.

Room Tip: Everything is good when you are inside this resort.

We went there for a quick holiday for our anniversary. On arrival we were given a cold towel which was very refreshing. We had a quick check in process and then were taken to the rooms in the shuttle.

Welcome drinks & fruits were sent immediately. We got the pool & lake facing room on the ground floor and the views from there were breath taking. The room was very spacious and aesthetically decorated. It had a locker, stocked mini fridge, coffee maker, hair dryer. Bathroom was neat & clean as well.

Breakfast was good but took a long time to be served on the first day as buffet was not available. During the day we out for sight seeing. The hotel can arrange cabs but if you can speak the local language, it will be better to book from outside.

We went for a swim in the pool in the evening when it was pleasant, but I agree with one of the reviews given before me that there are a lot gazing eyes. This in fact was the only improvement area for the hotel where the management could educate the staff on it.

Dinner didn't have much variety but the good thing was that you can order from the room and be at the restaurant once it is ready. Hotel has a gym & spa but we didn't have the time to use them so cannot comment on the same.

The hotel was pretty much empty probably as we went just before the season starts. Staff was very helpful and responded quickly for the smallest of our request. On our anniversary, each and every staff member who met us that day wished us which was really nice. This is has been one of my best stays in Kerala.

Thank you Ilona for a wonderful holiday.....

Will definitely recommend to all my family & friends.

Room Tip: We got room 404 which was lake & pool facing.

On the positive side, in line with other reviewers have commented the resort have some amazing views of the lake and a nice large pool (very close to the restaurant which may not be very attractive from a user perspective as there are lot of gazing eyes if you are in the pool with family). There is an onsite pedal-boating stream which is also good and safe. We booked a lake view premium villa (for a family of 5) assuming we will get a mini-apt, the impression you get from their official website (quote: ‘bedrooms are spacious, bathrooms have added luxury’ which gives you the impression that there are more than 1 in each villa and that’s truly misleading), please be aware that these are STD ensuite A/C double room. Our entire family were cramped in to this room for 3 days. Nothing much for kids to do which I found very strange on a family holiday location. All villas except presidential villa (which has a non-A/c second room but very expensive) is a typical double bed A/c room. If you think food is bit limited by looking at the menu you will be even more disappointed when you order, we were told what’s actually available in the menu, so basically the catt staff chose what we should eat. Breakfast menu had croissants listed, but none were available. Though very limited what we got was quality food, but in to the last day of our stay there wasn’t much to choose. Catt Staff friendly and helpful. But the front office staff slightly different, we were offered a free-gift on departure as part of our package, but after settling the food bills they said good –bye…(we were the only ones to check out at that time) then at the last minute, I had to hesitantly prompt the lady at the front desk about our free-gift which for a supposedly 5* resort sounded very unprofessional.
This is our second time to Kumarakom and I should have stick to Vivanta and not opted for a change. In short, if you are only interested in amazing views of the lake this could be an option. But if you want a quality holiday in a proper villa / appt suit look somewhere else more established, there are plenty in the area with stunning views of the lake.

Room Tip: Opt for the Presidential Pool villa if one can afford it.

Every rooms has great lake view and the view is amazing....Rooms are spacious..have really beautiful decor. The landscaping is really good. Huge beautiful swimming pool, but gym was only sparingly equipped.
However, the restaurant services were atrocious. We ordered food and it took them two hours and that too after creating an issue. Their prices are too steep to put up with this kind of service. Menu is very limited and the food was very mediocre.

Room Tip: Choose room near the restaurant and facing the lake
