We booked our stay at the Pamba Heritage Villa last minute after we had already arrived and stayed one night at a hotel near the Cochin airport. Shortly after I made reservations online, Rajeev emailed asking if we'd like to have his driver come pick us up. We were very much obliged as we hadn't quite decided how we were going to get there yet. He also asked us if we'd like lunch once we arrived and was very much welcomed. Rajeev, his assistant, and driver were all very kind and accommodating getting us all settled in.
I don't think we could have chosen a more perfect first stay in Kerala! The views of the river and houseboats humming by are picturesque. We loved the old world charm of our room and felt very cozy and at home. The rice fields out back immediately captured my attention - such a peaceful and pleasant experience looking out across the fields in the morning.
Our first breakfast (shown in the picture) I'll never forget. The flavors of the food are unlike anything I've tasted before. The Appam with coconut vegetable stew was especially exceptional! We loved everything we ate and only wish now that we could find a restaurant that served something similar near where we live in Seattle, WA. We enjoyed how Rajeev accompanied us during meals and would explain what each dish consisted of and some additional history behind it.
The highlight of our stay was the 2 and 1/2 hour backwaters boat ride that Rajeev arranged for us. It was a smaller boat that enabled us to ride through some of the smaller back canals that the bigger house boats can't go through. This was an excellent choice as we got to see so much more of life in Kerala than on the main river. The views, scenery, sights, and sounds were majestic! Loved being able to travel so close to homes and schools right near the water and see all of the happenings around us.
We often think of our visit to the Pamba and only wish we would have stayed in Kerala a bit longer. A few days simply wasn't enough! Thank you for helping to make such a memorable first visit to South India. Hope to visit again soon!
