My wife and two of our teenage children enjoyed a return visit to JiJi John's home stay. Our experience was even better than our first time seven years back. No big sights or pressure to do anything, just simple trips around the place for a massage or a boat ride, although the "stay back" option was always popular too! We all swam in the river and my son fished all day long, even catching a plate size karimeen. JiJi's wife Dhisha cooks an amazing variety of foods each day and happily had me hang over her shoulder one evening in her kitchen.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a simple but perfect experience Ina five star location.

Room tip: Cottages are more atmospheric and larger options

riverside retreat si a great place to stay with calm beautiful nature and with warm and kindly welcome from Jiji and his family
the bungalows are large and comfortable with mosqiuito net and the dinner an breakfast were full and succulent
we stay 4 nights only but it was our best stay in kerala and india during 3 weeks of holiday
we recommend this adress for romantic honey moon and families
you can discover the backwater by boat or walking but just try the new bicycles that Jiji can rent for you on cheapest prices and you will discover the full life in kerala with meeting people at your own speed and perhaps the best way to know really
it was unforgotable to see the smiles of people watching us on bicycles!try it!

A gorgeous location right on the river, what a treat to wake up and watch the sunrise in this peaceful location. A great place to write and relax and watch the houseboats go by. Delicious home cooked Keralan food. Just the right amount of attention from your host Mr Jiji and his wife, and good clean room, gorgeous garden and delightful neighborhood strolls to local villages easy to find with Mr. Jiji's map. Would have liked to stay longer here. ... perhaps next year I'll return for the Krishna temple festival!

We have been to Riverside several times & it has always been brilliant. Jiji & Jisha have had the new rooms upgraded. They are spotless - and there is now air-con!! The food, as always , is excellent, the position wonderful & the service superb. If you want peace & tranquillity, this is the place. Jiji can also arrange canoe trips & ayuvedic massages. We hope to be back next year -again!

The drawcard of this homestay is its excellent position so close to the river. This is what you want the experience of Alleppey to be all about. From the small porch of the cottage I stayed in I watched the life of the river roll by from the houseboat processions in the early morning to the regular ferrying of people on canoes throughout the day. It is extremely relaxing to sit all day long watching the river and enjoying the pretty garden with all its tropical flowers and plants. The owner is very helpful and organised a boat trip for my husband and I. We asked him at the last minute and he quickly organised a trip on a simple non-motorised boat. We meandered along the main river for 5 hours and enjoyed a lovely sunset. There are not many small canals up this end so if you want to experience the smaller canals (which I have done and which are really lovely) it would be better to organise something at Alleppey.
The food is incredibly good and there is a huge variety of dishes each night from chicken fry to fish and prawn fry to vegetable curries, dahls, chappatis. Plenty of Kingfisher beer available too.
The room we had (cottage) was basic overall and for the price paid seemed a little steep. The meals as well were quite a bit more expensive than we were used to paying at other homestays in Kerala. The final bill was quite a bit steeper than we were expecting.
Overall, however, this was a very enjoyable place to stay and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat on the water.
