We were delighted by our stay on the Saffron houseboat. We stayed one night. We had a very good lunch, tea with some snacks at 5, an excellent dinner, and a nice breakfast the next morning. The rooms were cleaned, the huge bathroom has a big jacuzzi (we did not try it, since we spent the most time on the roof balcony watching the life on the river and its borders). The staff does its most to fulfill every needs and to make your cruise unforgetable. The balcony could be even a better place if an umbrella was provided.

We stayed one night on Pepper as part of our tour in Kerala. Lovely welcome on arrival and we were quickly on the boat and given a tour of the boat and explanation of the tour before we set off. The boat was beautiful and clean. We were able to sit outside on a comfy stool each that the staff put out for us to sit on. We had taken our own wine and this was put in the fridge until we wanted it. The food served to us was a fantastic feast ! Once we were parked up for the night we were able to take a small boat to go down the narrow canal ways which the house boats couldn’t go, we were able to see the sun setting and watch the local people going about their business. It’s a shame we had to be off the boat by 9am it would have been nice to stay on until lunch time. The 3 staff members on our boat were all fab.

We booked a 6 bedroom luxury house boat from Spice Route. The boat arrived at our hotel Kumarakom Lake Resort at noon and one look at the inside of the house boat and we knew we were going to have a great time. The entrance to the boat had a small living area which could seat 12 of us and was air conditioned. There were 4 bedrooms on the lower level and 2 bedrooms and a huge dining/conference hall on the upper level. Each bedroom had its own attached bathroom, all of which was air conditioned. Even though it was the end of the monsoons, the humidity was still high and it was good to stay indoors staying cool and without mosquitoes and still enjoying the bearth taking views of Lake Vembanad.
The staff were very friendly and attentive. We were served lunch soon after we sailed and it was a simple but good lunch which included seafood. In the evening we stopped at a lakeside store to buy fresh shrimp that was cooked for us and served at dinner in addition to all the items they had prepared for us. The boat stops at 5.30 as no sailing is allowed after that, so we docked and spend the night there. We slept comfortablly and woke up to some coffee/tea which was served in the living room. We disembarked after breakfast after enjoying the entire experience.
The only problem was a bit of smell out of the bio toilets in the rooms, but it did not get in the way of great time.

Room Tip: Must try experience

Your visit to Kerela would be incomplete without an experience of the houseboat. Our experience with Spice Routes was undoubtedly one the high points of our trip.
I quite loved the names of their houseboats, all named after a spice , which is local to Kerela. We were three couples with a child and had booked a three bedroom houseboat 'Cinnamon'. The deck area was completely air conditioned through the day as well unlike few other range of houseboats that we had checked .
Also it has glass on all sides , hence, we enjoyed the outside view, while it also ensured child safety unlike in an open deck, which may not be easy with a toddler. The dining area and rooms were beautiful and very well maintained.
We also checked out other houseboats, which were equally beautiful and made to suits needs for everyone . The one with upper deck could also be an option. The latest addition to their family is one with jacuzzi which definitely needs to be checked out for.
We were provided with freshly prepared meals at lunch and dinner , which were delicious and homely. The breakfast and evening tea were also nice.
The best part was sitting on the outer open portion of the deck as the driver sailed though the awesome backwaters, surrounded on both sides by the tall standing coconut trees, which is what Kerela is famous for. We sailed for almost 5 hours until evening . Must do that !!!!! The driver was quite enthusiastic as he shared information about the rural life of Kerela.
Later in the evening , the staff arranged for a small boat, which sailed though the narrow canals, to show us around the villages of Kerela.
It was a lovely experience. However,
I suggest the management about provision of life jackets for the visitors, and an English speaking driver who could probably share information as we sail though the rural areas.
All in all, it has been an amazing experience and one of our best memories at Kerela!!!
