“China's Little Venice”
Reviewed 26 June 2011

Sure, some would call it cheesy... but then, so is the real Venice of today's Italy, with its hyper-commercialization. Zhouzhuang is a truly lovely "water town". Technically, it is a part of the greater Suzhou urban area. Some tours cover Suzhou only (which is of course lovely to visit, with its fabled gardens and canals). We were lucky enough to be on a tour that spent the afternoon in Zhouzhuang water town.

The only good way to experience it is via a boat ride. The "gondolier" is typically a woman, and - yes, like real Venice - many of these women would belt out a Chinese folk song for the promise of a tip. The sides of the canals are lined with restaurants and gift shops. It is unlikely that - except for the ultra-adventurous - the foreign tourists will frequent these small restaurants, but when we walked the town in the afternoon and took the boat ride, these places were lining up their veggies, meats, and especially fish for the evening meals. You of course may experience the sights of the restaurant owner bring out the fish to the same canal that your boat is plying, wash the fish, and arrange it aesthetically among the scallions and greens, ready for grilling or boiling in the evening.

The town has done a remarkable job of preserving its cobblestone streets and many lovely bridges. Almost each turn you make is a picture spot. People cultivate flower gardens that hang almost into the canals, adding to the picturesque setting. If you buy a "Suzhou" water color painting (and there are plenty available, at very reasonable - of course bargained - prices), you are likely to get views of Zhouzhuang rather than Suzhou proper. The canals, houses, and bridges in this charming water town are simply more photogenic and paint-able than Suzhou itself.
