Attraction details
Fee: Yes
Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Located near historic Savannah, this park borders Skidaway narrows, a part of Georgia’s intracoastal waterway. Trails wind through maritime forest and past salt marsh, leading to a boardwalk and observation tower. Visitors can watch for deer, fiddler crabs, raccoon, egrets and other wildlife. Inside the park’s interpretive center, birders will find binoculars, reference books and a window where they can look for migrating species such as Painted Buntings. Children will especially enjoy seeing the towering, 20-foot Giant Ground Sloth replica and reptile room. A scenic campground is nestled under live oaks and Spanish moss, while groups can enjoy privacy in their own pioneer campgrounds. Open-air picnic shelters and an enclosed group shelter are popular spots for parties, reunions and other celebrations.

“Bring your best bug spray”
Reviewed 15 February 2012

15 miles south of the Historic District (as the Truman Parkway flies), you can see the flora (and probably some snake-y fauna) that the first settlers had to contend with. Bring the DEET bug spray; the "green" stuff won't perturb the no-see 'ums from eating you alive.

“This is a family friendly place with something for everyone!”
Reviewed 9 February 2012

I really liked the clean cut grass leading to a building that looks much smaller on the outside and holds so many mysteries inside. This was just the beginning of what we were seeing at this park. We had made reservations to camp here during a 4 day weekend in October. We say the Institute at the park and it was fascinating! The grounds were very well kept, and there were lots of play areas for children to run and not get lost in the trees. Being there in October meant very warm days and perfect nights, and we enjoyed sitting and talking in the sweet breezes of fall. We saw many people, but it was never crowded with all of the openings for campers and tents, and we found ourselves with other Savannah residents as well as people from all over the United States and even some people from Kanata, Canada! We now have great friends that we plan on meeting in Canada one day soon, all thanks to ths Skidaway Island State Park and the restful, friendly, welcoming atmosphere that surrounded us as soon as we drove in, and stayed with us as we were waving goodbye.

“Beautiful state park near Savannah”
Reviewed 23 January 2012

We camped in our fifth wheel at Skidaway Island for four days and loved it. The campground was huge and flat with lots of trees. The trails were great for hiking or mt. biking. Highly recommended.

“Get outdoors & explore!”
Reviewed 16 January 2012

This is a really great place to get outside & be with nature for a while. You can go as light or as hardcore as you want! There are trails for running, walking, biking. You can see the river from the small beaches hidden all around the island & there is a lot of wildlife to see. This is one of my favorite areas to get out of the house & get closer to nature. My husband & I take our border collie and a picnic out to Skidaway every Sunday. You will enjoy it!

“Nature lovers need to go”
Reviewed 13 January 2012

We decided to go here based on the online site map, the sites in some places were nicely spaced. Had alot of privacy, very wooded, although the site we choose was not the shadiest. But overall, there are beautiful moss draped oaks everywhere! Suprisingly it was not crowded, even in June. There is a small but interesting nature museum type center to visit, with a giant sloth skeleton that looked like a dinosaur that kids would love, plus a large bird watching area with places to sit and watch thru a very large window where they have feeders galore. As a bird-watcher, I was in heaven! They also had many species of stuffed birds on display (which they say were all found, not killed.) There are also some nice bike trails that go very deep into the woods. A deer actually walked out about 20 feet in front of me, I don't know who was more startled, me or the deer! She stopped and stared at me for a few seconds until I tried to reach for my camera, then she was gone. I also saw a few raccoons very close-up and personal, bathing themselves by the water. The trail leads to an observation tower on the marsh, where you can see more birds and boats. I would visit this place again for sure.
